SummaryIn a series of 96 pregnant women with serum alpha-fetoprotein levels of less than 10μg/l at 16 weeks of pregnancy, 6 patients had a missed abortion, an incidence of 6·3 per cent, compared with an incidence of 0·9 per cent spontaneous mid-trimester fetal loss in 1489 women with serum alpha-fetoprotein levels of greater than 10μ/l
