The histological and biochemical (amylase, protein) consequences of occlusion by prolamine of the parotid duct were studied in 5 rabbits. Histological examination 2 weeks after occlusion revealed an atrophy of glandular parenchyma consistent with a very strong decrease of exportable glandular protein (especially amylase). At the same time marked sialadenitis-like changes could be noted. Prior to a possible use of occlusion by prolamine of the parotid duct in human patients, long-term studies in animals are therefore indicated.
