The hyperventilation occurring during induction of Epontol® (propanidid) anaesthesia is experimentally analyzed in the cat. The investigation shows that the Epontol solvent is not involved and vagotomy does not prevent the hyperventilation. Blocking the carotid sinuses abolishes the hyperventilation, which seems to be of the same origin as that after injection of lobeline and sodium cyanide. The hyperventilation is thus due to a pharmacological effect on the carotid sinus of the active substance in Epontol.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie bei der Narkoseeinleitung mit Epontol auftretende Hyperventilation wurde an Katzen experimentell analysiert. Die Untersuchung zeigte, daß das Epontol‐Lösungsmittel keinen Einfluß hat und daß Vagotomie die Hyperventilation nicht verhütet. Blockade des Carotis‐Sinus löscht jedoch die Hyperventilation aus, die anscheinend auf die gleiche Weise zustande kommt wie durch die Injektion von Lobelin und Natriumzyanid.
