The September-October 1971 issue of Nursing Research contained an article by Lorraine Olszewski Walker entitled “Toward a Clearer Understanding of the Concept of Nursing Theory” (pp. 428–435). Comments on Doctor Walker's article were invited for the purpose of encouraging further dialogue on the concept of nursing theory, and reactions were published in the November-December 1971 issue of Nursing Research (pp. 493–502). Commenting were Rosemary Ellis, “Reaction to Walker's Article”; Powhatan J. Wooldridge, “Meta-theories of Nursing: A Reaction to Dr. Walker's Article”; Jeannette R. Folta. “Obfuscation or Clarification: A Reaction to Walker's Concept of Nursing Theory”; and James Dickoff and Patricia James, “Clarity to What End?”. Doctor Walker's response to these discussions develops further thoughts on nursing theory.
