As the uncertainty of our nation's economic health continues, nursing administrators are increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of direct compensation. This article describes the Systematic Merit Allocation Reward Technique (SMART), a tool for reducing subjectivity inherent in many pay-for-performance programs. Besides expediting the allocation of merit increases, SMART ensures consistency of allocation within an organization and enhances the purpose and effectiveness of the performance appraisal process.
