The practitioner working with an alcoholic population is confronted with patients' denial of the disease, resistance to treatment, and dysfunctional patterns of thinking, feeling, and interacting. The article provides a theoretical framework of Gestalt therapy examining its application to the alcoholic's treatment. Practice interventions targeted toward problematic therapeutic issues are discussed. The importance of understanding the alcoholic's intrapsychic/interpersonal system prior to planning and implementing treatment is stressed.
