ZusammenfassungDie geographische Verbreitung der Meinertellidae insgesamt and speziell der 5 südamerikanischen Gattungen (Kuschelochilis, Machilinus, Machiloides, Meinertellus, Neomachilellus) wird dargestellt and diskutiert. Die fur Familien‐ und Gattungsdiagnose wichtigen Merkmale werden besprochen, die Meinertellidae als abgeleitete Gruppe charakterisiert. Die Familie konzentriert sich auf die Tropen and auf die Südhalbkugel, in Südamerika und der Notogäa stellt sie die einzigen Vertreter der Archaeognatha. Die weit verbreiteten GattungenMachiloidesundMachilinusbewohnen mit relativ wenigen endemischen Arten in Südamerika ausschließlich die Südspitze. Die GattungenMeinertellusandNeomachilelluswaren dagegen in der Lage, in die tropischen Waldgebiete einzudringen und sich in eine Vielzahl von Arten aufzuspalten. Zur Erklärung der derzeitigen Verbreitung wird eine Entstehung der Meinertellidae im Raum des heutigen Europa, eine Transgression des Ǎquators and für dasNeomachilellus‐Vorkommen im Osten der USA eine Verbreitung auf dem Wasserweg diskutiert. Die systematische Stellung der zwei im tropischen Afrika vorkommendenNeomachilellus‐Arten (N. lamtoensisundN. nimbensis) wird erörtert.SummaryOn the taxonomy, biogeography and evolution of South American Meinertellidae (Machiloidea, Archaeognatha, Insecta)The geographical distribution of the Meinertellidae and especially of the 5 South American genera (Kuschelochilis, Machilinus, Machiloides, Meinertellus, Neomachilellus) is described and discussed. The characteristics which are important for identification at family and genus level are dealt with, and the Meinertellidae are classified as a derived group. The family is concentrated in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. In South America and the Notogäa Meinertellidae are the only representatives of Archaeognatha. The widely spread generaMachilinusandMachiloidesinhabit only the southern tip of South America each with relatively few endemic species. On the other hand the generaMeinertellusandNeomachilelluswere able to penetrate the tropical rain forest and to produce a multitude of species. In order to explain the present distribution of Meinertellidae we assume a centre of evolution in the region of actual Europe, a transgression of the equator and with a view to the occurrence ofNeomachilellusin the Eastern USA a dispersal over water. The systematic position of the two species ofNeomachilellusoccuring in tropical Africa (N. lamtoensisandN. nimbensis) is discussed.ResumenContribución a la taxonomía, biogeografía y evolución de los Meinertellidae Suramericanos (Machiloidea, Archaeognatha, Insecta)Se presenta y discute la districubion geográfica de los Meinertellidae, especialmente la de los 5 géneros Suramericanos (Kuschelochilis, Machilinus, Machiloides, Meinertellus, Neomachilellus). Se tratan los caracteres tipicos pars la familia, los distintivos para los géneros y se demuestra que los Meinertellidae son un grupo derivado. La familia se concentra en los Trópicos y en el hemisferio Sur. En Suramerica y en la Notogea es la ünica representante de los Archaeognatha. Los génerosMachilinus y Machiloidesde distribución arnplia habitan en Suramerica unicamente en le pane Sur, cada uno con pocas especies endémicas; en cambioMeinertellus y Neomachilellusentraron en el “bosque pluvial” y originaron grande cantidad de especies.
