This article reviews the drug interactions and the basic pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole. It will cover side effects, including hypergastrinaemia and possible genotoxicity. The recent clinical applications of omeprazole are also reviewed, with particular reference to areas relevant to anaesthesia and intensive care.
