The antigenic specificity of a molecule found in tumor tissue of the G I tract has been established through a variety of immunologic studies; whether it can eventually provide the basis for a diagnostic test is not yet demonstrated. Since the substance is originally found in fetal cells, but only between the end of the second and sixth months of gestation, its reappearance in cancer may be associated with a derepression of genetic information.
