If high-intensity illumination is considered inappropriate as prophylaxis against jaundice in uncomplicated prematures, an alternative is available: increasing the environmental light of the premature nursery. This approach effectively controls hyperbilirubinemia in about three fourths of such infants. High-intensity phototherapy can then be reserved for the minority in whom serum bilirubin is approaching toxic levels.
