Data drawn from a larger study of a computerized hospital information system are used to explain differential accommodation of personnel to technological change on nursing units. Two measures of accommodation were used: Adaptiveness I, the difference between time of patient's discharge and time computer entry was made; and Adaptiveness II, the difference between time patient census is received at the nursing station and the time this census is verified via the computer system. Variables compared with these two measures included satisfaction (employee turnover), centralization, productivity, efficiency, and size, Adaptiveness was found to be inversely related to number of beds on the unit. The study led to an exploration of the literature in light of the findings.
