Volatile anesthetics exert important effects on many cellular and organ system metabolic parameters. Although insight about cell membrane changes have been complemented by studies of interactions with specific neurotransmitters and cellular calcium dynamics, a clear picture of the mechanisms responsible for anesthesia remains elusive. It is very fortunate that lack of total understanding does not preclude the safe and effective delivery of an anesthetic.
