Phenomenology is a philosophy, an approach, and a method. Possessed by a reverence for experience, it conforms to nursing's valuing. This is an introduction to the major themes and the method of phenomenology, and to some of the ways in which nurses might use the phenomenological approach in efforts to develop nursing knowledge. It is proposed that phenomenology contains elements that are familiar to many nurses, and hence readily accessible to us as methods.
