When grown with maltose or starch as carbon source at 37°C,Bacillus licheniformissynthesized two α‐glucosidases which could be resolved by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. One of these enzymes preferentially hydrolysedp‐nitrophenyl‐α‐D‐glucoside (pNPG) and the other was inactive onpNPG but hydrolysed maltose (maltase).
