The discovery of a multi‐million dollar deposit of manganese on the floor of Green Bay, Lake Michigan, was announced by Professor J. Robert Moore, a University of Wisconsin oceanographer. Pellets composed of manganese (2–17%), iron, and other elements were found in July by Professor Moore and a crew of graduate students during routine bottom sampling. Moore estimates that there are between 180 and 200 square miles in which concentrations of the deposit are sufficiently high to make mining practical, when techniques are perfected to guard against further pollution and ecological imbalance in the bay.
