Spasm of large peripheral arteries may complicate ergotamine tartrate therapy. A case is reported showing the characteristic features of predominant involvement of lower limbs, rapid improvement on cessation of ergotamine and arteriographic demonstration of a smooth narrowing, reversed on drug withdrawal. The mechanism of action, predisposing factors, individual susceptibility and arteriographic findings are discussed.
