The characteristics of common vascular grafts are described, including the histological appearances of mature grafts. Dacron is the most successful plastic used because of its superior mechanical and bonding properties. Complications are infrequent, but are always serious and often life threatening. Grafts to veins and small vessels are generally unsuccessful. Newer materials requiring longer evaluation include collagenized and velour plastic grafts.
