A major nursing shortage is threatening health care organizations, and as the supply of available nurses is shrinking, one hospital is examining the composite of the care team and determining the personnel options for the future. This article examines how Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital approaches the redesign of a critical care team. Through clarification of roles and job prioritizing, a group of alternate care providers was developed. The ability of the registered nurse to utilize the newly clarified alternate care providers is discussed as well as the limited care management skills of the RN that may effect her success of a new care team.
