The main purpose of this paper is to show a new technique for constructing a class ofq-nary type B1 codes by combining any number ofq-nary type B1 codes which are constructed by Hsu's method (Hsu 1969 a, b). If there arexdistinctq-nary type B1 codes, each is of rate (k− 1)/k, then thextype B1 codes can be combined to give a rate (xk− 1 )/xktype B1 recurrent codes. The use of theq-nary type B1 codes is very simple.
