Serratia marcescens, a gram-negative rod belonging to the family of the Ente-robacteriaceae maybe the cause of various ophthalmic infections, especially in patients with decreased resistance. The course of these ocular infections is always severe. This is the first description of a metastatic S. marcescens endophthalmitis. It developed in a patient with chronic lymphatic leukemia after prostatectomy. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to S. marcescens, an organism of increasing importance as an ocular pathogen.
