AbstractThe biology of 14 species of ambrosia beetles in the generaApoxyleborus, Eccoptopterus, Xyleborinus, Xyleborus, Xylosandrus, (Scolytidae),CrossotarsusandPlatypus(Platypodidae), found on the island of Mahé in the Seychelles is discussed. Particular attention is paid to their distribution, host plants, gallery systems, breeding systems and potential economic importance. Five species are recorded for the first time from the Seychelles. Brief notes are given on 7 further species recorded from the Seychelles, but not found in this study. The main threat to living trees comes from the twig borer,Xylosandrus compactus. A complex ofXyleborusspecies and platypodids may damage fresh timber.
