This is the third and last article in the series addressing the Computer-based Patient Record (CPR) as an essential technology for health care. This article, part of the 1995 Applied Information Technology series, addresses the various CPR trends observed by the authors over the last several years. Specific focus is directed toward trends related to various attributes and key underpinnings as described in the preceding articles. The first article in this series, appearing in the March/April 1995 issue ofComputers in Nursing, provided background and other relevant information on CPR design, development, and status. The second article, appearing in the May/June 1995 issue, addressed the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) CPR attributes, defined subattributes for each, and identified five key “underpinnings” required to support a robust CPR.
