Injecting drug use encompasses intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous routes of administration.The literature fails to make any distinction but is assumed to be referring to the intravenous route which carries the most risk. This review reflects on the trends reported in the parenteral transmission of infection, most notably HIV, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus. The role of preventative strategies is also addressed.
