Patients' physical recoveries and emotional welfare were reported on two self-rating scales. A third scale measuring the need for social approval was completed by 64 patients. The scores on each scale were examined to determine a relationship. Only the report of physical recovery seemed to be influenced by the need for approval. Implications for future research are discussed as is the patient acceptability of the social desirability scale
