32 ABSTRACTS OF CHEMICAL PAPERS Organic Reaction of Olefines with Solid Cuprous Halides. E. R. Gilliland H. L. Bliss and C. E. Kip. ( J . Amer. Chem. SOL 1941 63 2088-2096.)-The paper reports a continuation of previous work (Gilliland Seebold FitzHugh and Morgan J . Amer. Cham. SOC. 1939 61 1960) and deals with the reaction of diolefines and acetylene with solid cuprous halides. Acetylene will not react directly with solid cuprous halides but the addition compounds can be prepared by Chavastelon's method (Conzpt. rend. 1898 126 1810) according to which to obtain the cuprous chloride compound, cuprous oxide is dissolved in 38 per cent. hydro-chloric acid and acetylene is bubbled through the solution. Dilution with water gives a white pre-cipitate which is removed washed with alcohol and ether and dried in a current of acetylene; a purple colour indicates formation of the complex.C,H .2CuC1. With cuprous bromide acetylene reacts approximately mol. for mol. Butadiene and isoprene also react with solid cuprous chloride, giving addition products C4H .2CuC1 (or C4H,.2CuC1.4H,0) and C5H,.3CuC1 (or more probably C5H,.2CuC1) respectively. The formation of these compounds is a simple and effective method of purifying butadiene and isoprene. No reaction of amylene and cyclopentadiene with solid cuprous chloride could be detected. E. M. P. Anomalous Bromination Reaction. Ana-lytical Bromination of Styrene and Indene by the Kaufmann Method. C. W. Jordan. ( J . Amer. Chem. Soc. 1941 63 2687-2689.)-1n Kaufmann's method for the determination of the bromine values of unsaturated compounds (Arch.Pharm. 1925 263 32; 2. Untevs. Lebensm. 1926, 51 3; ANALYST 1926 51 474) i t has been assumed since the total amount of bromine consumed is always approximately equal to that calculated by theory that all the bromine is attached to the two adjacent carbon atoms of the double bond and that no substitution products are formed. The author finds however that after a 3-hour bromination period approximately 50 per cent. of the total bromine consumed is present in solution as hydrobromic acid ; the original reagent contained no hydrobromic acid and i t is prepared preferably by adding sufficient bromine to a saturated solution (12 to 15 per cent.) of anhydrous sodium bromide in methanol to produce a 0.1 N solution.The exact titre is obtained by titrating the iodine liberated from potassium iodide against 0.1 N sodium thiosulphate solution. The sample (0.1 to 1.0 g.) is mixed with 15 ml. of chloroform and an excess of reagent a t 20" C. and allowed to react usually for 2 hours; the excess of bromine is then titrated iodimetrically . Very little hydro-bromic acid was found however when synthetic styrene or purified indene was titrated with ORGANIC 33 standard solution of bromine in carbon tetra-chloride by McIlhiney's method (1. Amer. Chem. Soc. 1902 24 1109; ANALYST 1902 28 41); the substitution bromine was 0.27 and 0-48 mg.-equiv. per ml. respectively. It is therefore inferred that a reaction product other than the substituted dibromide must be produced during Kaufmann's reaction and with styrene there is evidence that this is cc- or w-bromostyrene C,H,.CH=CHBr; its formation may be due to the simultaneous action of both molecular and atomic bromine e.g.&Ha+ Br2+ Br+Br+ C,H,Br,+C,H,~Br+HBr. I t is suggested that Kaufmann's bromine solution may prove useful for modifying other common bromination reactions. J . G. Separation of Mixtures of Higher Saturated Fatty Acids by Adsorption. H. G. Cassidy. ( J . Amer. Chem. SOC. 1941 63 2735-2739.)-1f the Tswett chromatographic adsorption method is used with a commercial carbon (Darco G-60) as adsorbent the zones formed by white substances are rendered visible. [It is noted in this connection that W. Trappe (Biochem. Z. 1940 306 316) ob-served that columns of silica gel become transparent or translucent when wetted by certain solvents, and that under these conditions i t is possible to see zones formed by colourless substances since these effect a change in the light transmission of the parts of the column in which they occur.] Not all carbons are suitable for this purpose; e .g . if they are alkaline they may retain the acids by reaction rather than by adsorption. If a high column is used the weight of carbon should be 4 times that of the mixture to be adsorbed in order to separate a pair of homologous fatty acids which differ by 6 carbon atoms; for a 2-carbon difference the ratio should be 10 1 and with mixtures of 4 acids 15 1. Petroleum spirit (b.p. 30" to 70" C.) is preferred for the solvent and to develop the zones and it may also be used for the elution of acids of high mol.wt. (e.g. C,, C,,) although ligroin (b.p. 90" to 105" C.) or a mixture of benzene and acetone (97 3 by vol.) 1s preferable for C, or C, acids; methanol is even more active than acetone in this respect but it involves the risk of ester formation. The use of mixtures of these solvents however enables the rate of development to be adjusted. The disad-vantage of the method is that it is slow especially i f the mixture is complex; on the other hand it may be shortened if only qualitative results are desired and it requires little attention. With a mixture of lauric and stearic acids 93 per cent. of the acids were recovered and of this 8 per cent.was a middle fraction consisting of the mixed acids. The separation of an equimolecular mixture of palmitic and stearic acids required about 100 days and the addition of 20g. of a filter-aid to l o g . of carbon; the more general use of filter-aids is limited by the fact that they may adsorb the sample. The overall recovery of the acid and the recoveries of the palmitic and stearic acids were 99 54 and 52 per cent. respectively; an additional 40 per cent. of the total acids was recovered as a mixed fraction, which consisted of palmitic and stearic acids only in amounts which could be calculated from the equiv. wt. of the mixture. The separation was accelerated to 7 days by developing in succession with petroleum spirit and ligroin and eluting in succession in mixtures of petroleum spirit with acetone and with methanol.An apparatus for these lengthy separations is described in which the developing solvent is siphoned over into the column of carbon from a closed shielded round-bottomed flask with the aid of nitrogen under a slight pressure ; every 4 days the reservoir is refilled and the per-colate fraction is removed. A solution of 1.0 milli-mole each of lauric myristic palmitic and stearic acids in 100 ml. of petroleum spirit was adsorbed in a similar column which was then percolated with solvent (500ml. in 24 hours) for 100 days. The respective recoveries were 78 85 77 and 60 per cent. (total 93.5 per cent. of the acids added). A partial separation suitable for qualitative purposes was obtained in 9 hours (cf.id. 1940 62 3073). J. G. Oil from Amaranthus retrofiexus Seeds. B. E. Christensen and L. S. Miller. ( J . Awzer. Chem. SOC. 1941 63 2272-2273.)-Seeds of Amaranthus retrojexus L. (red root pigweed plant) were collected in Oregon the hulls were removed, and the ground seeds were extracted with ether. The characteristics of the oil (yield 7 per cent.) were sp.gr. (24"/4O C.) 0.9236; n 1.4751; iodine value (Hanus) 89.9; sapon. value 187.4; unsaturated acids 71.6 per cent.; saturated acids, 18.6 per cent.; acetyl value 14.4; mean mol. equiv. of saturated acids 263.0; mean mol. equiv. of un-saturated acids 302.0; iodine value of unsaturated acids 122.0; iodine value of saturated acids 22.5; unsaponifiable matter 7.6 per cent. acid value 3.9.Fractionation of the unsaturated and saturated acids indicated that the former consisted largely of C, acids probably oleic and linolic while the latter were principally palmitic with a small per-centage of stearic acid. The original oil was cal-culated to contain oleic 46; linolic 25; palmitic, 16.9; stearic acid 1-7 per cent. E. B. D. Determination of Diethyleneglycol-mono-ethyl-ether. I. S. Shupe. ( J . Assoc. Off. Agr. Chem. 1941 24 936-944.)-Under the conditions of the method diethyleneglycol-monoethyl-ether is converted into the corresponding xanthate which is separated and titrated with standard iodine solution. The method is applicable to the relatively small amounts of the glycol ether that may occur in cosmetic preparations. A solution containing 25 to 250mg.in 10ml. of water is treated in a separator with l o g . of solid potassium hydroxide and when cold with 5 ml. of alcohol-free carbon disulphide. The mixture is shaken for a minute, with cautious opening of the tap and the shaking is repeated a t intervals during 5 minutes. The liquid is then extracted with four 15-ml. portions of a mixture of equal parts of alcohol-free acetone and benzene each extract being filtered through a cotton-wool plug. The combined extracts are mixed with 30ml. of petroleum spirit (b.p. 35" to SOOC.) and extracted with a t least three 25-ml. portions of water and' the combined aqueous extracts which must be free from potassium hy-droxide are diluted to 200 ml. and 2 g. of potassium iodide and 5 ml. of 0.05 per cent.starch solution are added. The liquid is then titrated with 0.05 N iodine solution. Owing to the presence of acetone, the end-point fades gradually. Each ml. of 0.05 N iodine solution is equivalent to 6-7 mg. of diethylene-glycol-monoethyl-ether. To identify the compound, the xanthate is prepared from 200 to 500 mg. in the manner described and the liquid is extracted with two 15-ml. portions of the acetone and benzene mixture. The crystals are collected in a sintered glass crucible washed with ether and kept covered with ether to prevent ab-sorption of moisture. They are dried by passing air through the crucible and their m.p. is determined. The m.p. of diethyleneglycol-monoethyl potassium xanthate thus prepared is 86” to 88” C.A portion (0-3 g.) is dissolved in water and titrated with 0.05 N iodine solution after addition of potassium iodide as previously described. The iodine equiva-lent is calculated by multiplying the ml. of 0.06 N . iodine solution corresponding with 1 g. of the crystals by 6.346 the theoretical value being 511.1. The molecular weight of the alcoholic portion of the compound is found by multiplying the number of mg. of the compound taken by 20 dividing by the number of ml. of iodine solution used and deducting 114.2 from the result. The molecular weight of the glycol ether is 134.1. Since many primary and secondary alcohols form xanthates, preliminary separations are often necessary. In cosmetics the more common interfering substances include ethyl and iso-propyl alcohols glycols and ethanolamines.Low-boiling alcohols may be re-moved by vacuum distillation. Under the con-ditions of the method they are incompletely con-verted into xanthates and these are only slightly soluble in the acetone and benzene mixture. Glycerol ethylene glycol and sorbitol did not inter-fere with the method. The following experiment is an example of the preliminary treatment of a cosmetic preparation. Diethyleneglycol-monoethyl-ether (112.7 mg.) was mixed with 5 g. of vanishing cream containing stearic acid (24 per cent.) potas-sium hydroxide (0.5 per cent.) triethanolamine (0.5 per cent.) glycerol ethyleneglycol propylene glycol sorbitol (2 per cent. of each) and water (67 per cent.).The preparation was heated with benzene and acetic acid to break the emulsion and dissolve the stearic acid the aqueous layer was made alkaline with an equal weight of potassium hydroxide and the glycol ether was extracted with a mixture of equal parts of petroleum spirit and benzene. It was then re-extracted from the solvent with water and the method described was applied to the aqueous solution. The preparation of a reference standard of the pure substance from commercial “carbitol solvent” is described. With this standard which had b.p. 201.9” to 202.1’ C., sp.gr. 0.9892 and nT-1.4266 assays by the xanthate titration showed an average recovery of 99-2 per cent. A.O. J. Chem. 1941 24, 728-730.)-Certain types of “skin bleaches” contain mercury bismuth and zinc usually mixed with petrolatum or lanoline to form a salve. After separation of the medium by extraction with chloroform and dilute hydrochloric acid (1 +l) the three metals can be successively separated by pre-cipitation with hydrogen sulphide a t different acidities. This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international. The chemistry of ink, difficult as it is and at times not a little obscure, hcl- riot developed markedly in the interval since 1924; but what progress has been made is covered by Dr.Mitchell in this edition in a very thorough manner.
