This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international. The chemistry of ink, difficult as it is and at times not a little obscure, hcl- riot developed markedly in the interval since 1924; but what progress has been made is covered by Dr.Mitchell in this edition in a very thorough manner. He has found it necessary to enlarge his work to the extent of some 20 per cent. and, in addition, to rewrite a large portion. The arrangement of the book follows the lines of previous editions. THE method described by Pregll for the micro-determination of halogens in organic compounds is satisfactory for most substances but has been found to give low results with certain volatile organic chlorine compounds. The micro Parr-bomb method described by Elek and Hill2 has also in my experience proved unsuitable. The method described below gives satisfactory results in the analysis of such compounds. A brief account of the work done in connection with the Parr-bomb and Pregl methods is also given. EXPERIMENTAL PREGL’S RilETHoD.-Some results obtained in the analysis of carbon tetrachloride are recorded in Table I.The procedure recommended by Pregl was followed exactly but the apparatus was slightly modified by inserting a ground-glass joint between the combustion tube A and the absorption tube €3 (Fig. 1). This modification introduced by B e a ~ l e y ~ A C D B Fig. 1. is more convenient than Pregl’s original one-piece tube and was therefore used throughout the investigation of his method. Per Cent. 2.670 88.80 2.720 89.40 2.895 85.10 4.239 87.10 the results given in Table I various modifications of the platinum catalysts C D (Fig. 1) were tested but in no instance was any improvement observed.For most of the deter-minations the values obtained for the chlorine content of carbon tetrachloride were above 80.0 per cent. but no value above about 89.5 per cent. was obtained. The various modi-fications of platinum catalyst employed are brief€ y described below. In each experiment the length of catalyst was about 10.0 cm. Thin platinum wire (diam. 0.005 in.) arranged to form a plug. The usual platinum foil contacts (C D Fig. 1) separated by a platinum wire plug and held in position by two similar plugs. Platinised asbestos plug placed between two platinum wire plugs. Platinised asbestos packed round a silica rod carrying a perforated silica disc a t one end. The results obtained with this arrangement were higher than those obtained with platinised asbestos in modification (c).This may be attributed to more uniform heating of the catalyst resulting in less loss of chlorine by combination with insufficiently heated platinum. Cylinder of platinum foil enclosing a Jena glass rod. This cylinder was made to fit closely into the combustion tube. This modification is considered to be an irnprove-ment on the original arrangement of platinum foil contacts and is recommended for use in the analysis of non-volatile halogen compounds. With this form of catalyst the mixture of oxygen and vapour of the sample has to pass over the hot platinum surface as a thin layer and thus make better contact than is possible with the usual platinum foil catalysts 48 COLSON THE MICRO-DETERMINATION OF CHLORINE I N YOLATILE OKGAlC IC COMI’OUSDS THE ~ ~ I C R O YAim-Ko&fB.-Before using this bomb (Fig.2) for experiments with volatile organic substances a few determinations of chlorine in a solid organic compound (chlorodinitrobenzene; 17.6 per cent. of chlorine) were made. The procedure of Elek and Mill2 was followed exactly. The weighed sample was mixed in the bomb with 30 mg. of a 3 1 inixture of potassium nitrate and cane sugar and 1-5 g. of sodium peroxide. The following results (corrected for a “blank” value of 0.14 mg.) were obtained: Weight of sample taken mg. . . . . . . 4-75 4-861 6.140 5.008 Chlorine found per cent. . . 17.30 l i e 5 0 15.56 17.66 A series of determinations of chlorine in carbon tetrachloride (92.19 per cent. of C1) was next made exactly the same amount of fusion mixture as before being used.The liquid was weighed in a capillary tube which was sealed before being introduced into the bomb It was found that the capillary tubes were not completely shattered by the heat applied to the bomb and sometimes were not broken at all. The maximum value obtained for the chlorine content of this compound was 74.40 per cent. P Fig. 2. Fig. 3. The effect of varying the composition of the fusion inixture was nest examined. The results obtained in these experiments are summarised in Table IT. The most promising results were obtained in experiment No. 6 but unfortunately later results obtained were consistently high. High values were also obtained at this stage in the analysis of chloro-dinitro benzene.In this connection it may be pointed out that Elek and Hill2 refer to the similar irregular behaviour of the earlier type of stainless steel bomb. The bomb used in our experiments was made from the nickel-chromium alloy “Illium.” The high values obtained with carbon tetrachloride are undoubtedly due almost entirely to contamination of the silver chloride precipitates by silica derived from the glass capillary tubes used for weighing out the samples. No visible separation of silica occurs on acidification of the bomb contents after completion of the fusion but a spectrographic examination carried out by Mr. L. H. Cross of this department has shown that the silver chloride obtained contains a significant amount of silica minor quantities of copper, aluminium iron and magnesium and a trace of chromium.Subsequent chemical analysis of a sample of mixed silver chloride precipitates (from the analysis of solid and liquid compounds) indicated the presence of about 0.5 per cent. of silica. In an investigation of the semi-micro determination of sulphur by fusion with sodium peroxide in a Tarr-bomb Lincoln Carney and Wagner4 found it necessary to remove silica in the analysis of liquid compounds. This additional operation increases the time required for the analysis of such substances thereby affecting the principal advantage of the bomb-fusion method. NEW &!ETHOII.-The micro-determination of chlorine in organic compounds (including carbon tetrachloride) by ignition with lime in an iron bomb has been described by MacNeviii and R a ~ l e y .~ Owing to the difficulty experienced with the Parr-bomb (see above) this method has not been studied. Kimball and TuftsG have obtained good results in the macro-determination of chlorine in carbon tetrachloride and other compounds by ignition with lime in a hard glass tube closed at one end. Several determinations were made and in every instance the capil-lary tubes were shattered during the fusion period. The maximum value obtained was 85.30 per cent. of chlorine. The results obtained in six determinations varied from 72.0 per cent. of chlorine to 91.0 per cent. of chlorine. In three cases there was evidence of leakage a t a point between the cap A and the rim 13 of the bomb. (Fig. 2.) These experiments were conducted in a bomb provided with a modified clamp P (Fig. 3) designed to produce a more even pressure on the bomb lid.The maximum result obtained was 86.0 per cent. of chlorine. The In this method the sample is mixed with oxygen and passed over heated platinum foil and heated lime in succession. The chlorine is finally precipitated with silver nitrate solution after the lime has been dissolved in nitric acid. The amount of lime required is very much less than the quantity employed in the two methods referred to above owing to the fact that probably more than 90 per cent. of the oxidation of the sample is effected by the platinum catalyst. Procedwe.-(1) Into the cleaned and dried combustion tube A (Fig. 4) introduce the platinum cylinder B the perforated platinum cylinder C (containing about 0.5 g. of granular calcium oxide) the glass rod D,7 the fused sodium carbonate E (about 0.5 g.) and the glass rod F. (2) Place the combustion tube in the electrically heated furnace (Fig. 5 ) join the end A of the tube t o a supply of oxygen and displace the air from the apparatus. During this period raise the temperature of the furnace to 700" C. and weigh the sample in the usual capillary tube containing ammonium nitrate.' (3) Place the capillary tube containing the weighed sample in the small platinum trough G (Fig.4 ) and introduce it into the combustion tube. Adjust the speed of the stream of oxygen to not more than 3 ml. per minute and heat the sample carefully in the usual manner. When 140 ml. of oxygen have passed through the apparatus remove the combustion tube from the furnace and allow it to cool. The volume of oxygen used may be conveniently measured by attaching the inlet tube of a Mariotte flask (Pi-egP) to the esit-end H of the combustion tube 30 COLSOK THE NICRO-DETERMINATIOX OF CHLORINE I N VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUSDS (4) Dissolve about 100 rng. of hydrazine sulphate in about 6 ml. of hot water and pour the solution into the filter-tube N (Fig. 6). Transfer the fused sodium carbonate and the two glass rods D F from the combustion tube to the filter-tube and then empty the lime from the cylinder C on to the filter after removing the two platinum wire plugs I( L.Wash these plugs and the cylinder C with dilute nitric acid (1 10) and add the washings to the filter-tube together with similar washings from the platinum cylinder B and the combustion tube. The total volume of the solution in the filter-tube at this stage should not exceed about 30 ml. To this solution add 5 ml. of pure conc. nitric acid and shake to dissolve the lime. Filter the resulting solution into the receiver M and rinse the filter with several small quantities of dilute nitric acid (1 10). Transfer the combined filtrates to an 80-ml. boiling-tube add 3 ml. of 5 per cent. silver nitrate solution and heat Fig. 5 (g actual size) Vig.6 ($ actual size). in a boiling water-bath for about 10 minutes. Filter the cold solution through a weighed micro-filter (Preg19) dry the silver chloride precipitate at 120” C. for 10 minutes and weigh. Platinum foiZ (0.005 in. thick).-This is used for making the cylinders B and C (Fig.4). Oxygen.--This is taken from a cylinder and passed through (a) sodium carbonate solution ; ( b ) a pressure regulatorlo containing concentrated sulphuric acid ; (c) a U-tube containing “Carbosorb” and “Anhydrone” (magnesium perchlorate) in that order. Fzised sodium caf4onate.-This was prepared by fusing “Analar” sodium carbonate in a platinum basin and pouring the molten mass on to a clean metal plate (iron). The cold material was then broken up and sieved to obtain pieces of convenient size (16 B.S.S.).When not in use this substance should be stored in a desiccator over soda-lime. Before use in the analyses the reagent should be ignited in a platinum basin and then sieved to remove any very fine particles. Drscuss!oN.-Fz.1zzction of the columzt of cold sodium carbonate E (Fig. 4).-1n a series of experiments on the ashing of various materials at different temperatures Picketll found that loss of chlorine may sometimes occur a t a temperature as low as 500” C. In the determination of chlorine in organic compounds by the method described above (p. 49) the halogen is absorbed in calcium oxide heated to about 700” C. At that temperature some loss of chlorine is to be expected and in fact has been observed. The short column of fused sodium carbonate has therefore been introduced into the cod portion of the combustion tube to serve as a trap for any halogen escaping from the heated calcium oxide.In preliminary experiments a short length of cold granular calcium oxide was used, but it was found that the combustion tube became blocked by the calcium hydroxide formed by combination of the lime with the water formed during combustion of the sample. The function of the perforated platin?m$ cylinder C (Fig. 4).-When calcium oxide is heated a t 700” C. in direct contact with the wall of the combustion tube A (Fig. 4) it attacks the glass to a considerable extent. In several experiments this attack was confirmed by the fact that a visible separation of silica occurred on acidification of the calcium oxide.It is therefore essential to protect the wall of the combustion tube (preferably 01 Jena glass) by enclosing the calcium oxide in a platinum cylinder as already indicated. The “blas.zk” valzies.-The “blank” values were determined in exactly the same manner as the actual chlorine determinations. The average value obtained was 0.30 mg. expressed as silver chloride. This value is perhaps rather large relative to the amounts of siller chloride usually obtained in the analysis of samples but so far it has not been found possible to reduce it. ExperimeEts in which the usual quantities of calcium oxide and fused sodium carbonate were dissolved in nitric acid (withozt any preliminary heating in the combustion tube in a stream of oxygen) and treated with silver nitrate solution gave quantities of silver chloride not exceeding about 0-1 mg.Granular calcium oxide prepared from “Analar” calcium carbonate behaved in exactly the same manner as the B.D.H. “14-20 mesh” reagent. The cause of the high “blank” value obtained in the normal procedue requires further investigation. mination of bromine in volatile organic compounds by the new method has not been examined in detail but the results so far obtained indicate that an accuracy of about I per cent. may be expected. This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international. The chemistry of ink, difficult as it is and at times not a little obscure, hcl- riot developed markedly in the interval since 1924; but what progress has been made is covered by Dr.Mitchell in this edition in a very thorough manner. He has found it necessary to enlarge his work to the extent of some 20 per cent. and, in addition, to rewrite a large portion. The arrangement of the book follows the lines of previous editions. After a comprehensive historical introduction, the work is divided into three sections dealing with writing inks, printing inks, and inks for miscellaneous purposes, respectively. Under Section 1 are considered the chemical nature and treatment of the various raw materials used for writing inks from lcmp black to galls, the composition of finished iron-gall, logwood, vanadium, aniline black, and coloured inks, as well as a comprehensive scheme €or the tech~ical examination of inks, handwriting specimens and the identification of forge:-ies.Section 2 deals with the manufacture and examination of printing inks. ,tnd Section 3 with the miscellaneous materials entering into the compositilxx of copying, marking, safety, sympathetic, typewriter inks and so on. Amongst new matter may be noted references to the use of lignone sulphni--,ites in connection with writing ink, a scheme for the identification of individual con- stituents in inks in the form of writing, and the application of filtered ultra-.& if )let light and of infra-red photography in the elucidation of those problems to which such methods are suited. The British Government Standard Specificatior:s for Writing Inks, revised in 1928, are included for the first time. The avaihble evidence upon the constitution of gallotannin is brought up to date and <tbly reviewed, and there is a Comprehensive list of British patents.It is as difficult to withhold admiration of the encyclopaedic scope cjf the matter and references in this book as it is of the erudition and industry displiiyed in its compilation. Practically nothing that comes to mind has escaped atterition, and it is with rather impish glee that the reviewer, after careful search, asserts that he finds no specific reference to the type of alkaline (ammoniacal) gallotannate- iron ink, said t o find favour in the United States, although the di-ammonium hydroxyferrigallate compound of Silbermann and Ozorovitz receives notice. Nor is there mention of that class of quick-drying writing fluids which depend for their efficiency upon partial destruction of the paper sizing by caustic alk 1.5 or sodium silicate.There is no evidence that lignone sulphonate inks have proved se-rious competitors to iron-gall writing inks (pp. 15 and 175).
