摘要:
This paper sets forth contrasting hypotheses about the influence of racial and ethnic group membership on the relationship between mobility and fertility. One may be termed theminority group statusapproach, and the other theunderdevelopmentapproach. Both perspectives offer bases for predicting fertility levels that deviate from the level that is roughly the average of the fertility levels typical of the social strata between which mobility has occurred. But the former implies greater fertility deviations themoreintegrated the minority group is into the larger society, whereas the latter suggests greater deviations the less integrated the minority group is into the larger society. These ideas are tested using data from a sample of Mexican American couples, split according to generational distance from Mexico. The results indicate more support for the minority group status than the underdevelopment hypothesis, as revealed by lower than average expected fertility on the part of couples removed at least three generations from Mexico.

摘要:
Studies indicate that respondents experiencing equal-status contact across ethnic lines are more likely to hold tolerant attitudes toward minorities than those not having been exposed to such interaction. This paper extends the research on this proposition in three ways. We examine: (1) responses of blacks reporting equal-status contact with Jews; (2) effects of equal-status contact compared with other types of reported associations with Jews such as perceived economic mistreatment; and (3) possible trends in the shifting effects of both types of reported contact over time. The findings indicate strong support for the contact hypothesis, particularly when equal-status contact is intimate and occurs in a noninstitutional setting. On the other hand, they show that perceived economic mistreatment is strongly related to heightened antipathy toward Jews. When the two types of reported contacts are compared for their predictive effects, the economic variable exerts by far the greater influence of the two. Last, we examine trends in the changing effects of these two types of reported contact on anti-Semitism. We observed two patterns. First, the younger generation of blacks exhibits a weaker inverse relationship between intimate, equal-status contact and anti-Semitism than older cohorts. Second, the positive association between perceived economic mistreatment and the dependent variable increases with each younger generation. These findings suggest that there are generational changes taking place in black-white relations.

摘要:
This paper investigates the accuracy of theory and research suggesting that higher-status workers are more likely than other workers to maximize travel distance because of disagreeable features of the area around worksites. Our evidence suggests that higher-status white, male workers have relatively long commuting distances in old metropolitan areas while this is less true of new metropolitan areas. Journey to work patterns thus seem to explain some of the differences in residential structure between new and old metropolitan areas.

摘要:
This research note demonstrates that M1 and M2, two of the six measures of the division of labor discussed by Gibbs and Poston, commonly conceptualized as measures of qualitative variation, can be interpreted in terms of the expanded binomial probability model. Ml is the variance of the expanded binomial probability model and M2 is the ratio of the variance of the expanded binomial model to the variance of a binomial model.

摘要:
Berry and his associates presented a new nominal level measure of associationK, that is useful for statistically evaluating research hypotheses applied to a 2 × 2 contingency table. We have added shortcut computational equations forKalong with an alternative interpretation. Limitations ofKare noted, including specified logical relations being in part a function of the marginal configuration and the lack of the property of invariance. Two new coefficients are added, one of which expandsKto larger tables and to a wider scope of measures and another that normsKby its expected value.
