摘要:
This research evaluates the claim of a general tension between religiosity and civil rights militance among black Americans through a secondary analysis of the 1964 Gary Marx data. It shows that when important secular factors are controlled, Marx's findings of (a) greater militance in largely white denominations (Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and Roman Catholic), and (b) an inverse correlation between militance and both church attendance and orthodoxy of belief essentially disappear. Additional lines of analysis support the proposal of Nelsen et al. (b) that only a sectlike orientation corrodes militance, while a churchlike orientation actually makes for greater militance.

摘要:
Using data from 1973 and 1974 national surveys, this study examines differences between black and white workers in the value of job rewards. It was found that black workers were more likely than white workers to prefer extrinsic rewards of high income and job security and less likely to prefer an intrinsic reward of feelings of job accomplishment. These differences persisted after controlling for education, occupation, and income. About half of the original racial effect was found to be due to these three measures of objective social class and about half to race alone. These findings are discussed as they bear on the race-class issue and Maslow's theory of job values.

摘要:
Recently “indirect effects,” “isolation,” and “ethnic community” arguments have been offered to explain the political participation rates of black Americans. Each of these theories is criticized on the basis of both contemporary and historical evidence and because of the severely limiting assumptions underlying the arguments. In their stead, a political climate theory of participation is presented as a defensible alternative. Historical support is offered, underlying assumptions are discussed, and alternative methods of testing the thesis are suggested.

摘要:
Using a role perspective, expectations are derived about changes in voluntary association membership levels across the family life cycle. The expected curvilinear relationship was found in national survey data from 1967 to 1974. The relationship remained even with race, sex, and education levels held constant in a log-linear analysis of multiway contingency tables. The curvilinear pattern differed somewhat between the two samples, but the general pattern held regardless of the type of organization. Slight increases in membership rates were found over time, suggesting a continuance of trends noted in samples from previous years.

摘要:
Gove has proposed that sex differences in psychiatric illness among the married might best be accounted for in terms of differences in the typical roles occupied by married men and married women. The effects of employment, number of children and age of youngest child on the feeling that one (a) confronts incessant demands from others, (b) desires to be alone, (c) feels lonely, and (d) manifests psychiatric symptoms support his sex role explanation.

摘要:
Following Seeman's conceptualization, multiple measures of alienation were employed to investigate differential fertility behavior among 328 couples in their childbearing years. With the effects of demographic and socioeconomic variables partialled out, significant remaining variance in a series of dependent fertility measures was explained by various combinations of family and societal alienations. The alienations obtained from husbands were equal in importance to those from the wives, and combining the alienations of wives and husbands increased the amount of remaining variance explained.

摘要:
Cultural interpretations have dominated the study of class differences in entering psychiatric treatment. This study compares the power of cultural variables and structural variables to predict the entry into psychiatric treatment. The concept of the social network is used to show that structural relationships, in addition to the culture of the different social classes, are important predictors of psychiatric labels and referrals, severity of symptoms, and duration of symptoms in the community. Interviews with 120 outpatients and short-term inpatients at a community mental health center provide the data for the study. The findings support the hypothesis that structural variables are important determinants of the pathways into psychiatric treatment and point to the need to link the structure of social networks to the content of networks.

摘要:
Extending the conception of positions in networks (Burt, c) to the case of a multiple network system, a general conception of stratification and prestige in a system of actors is outlined. The status / role-set duality is preserved by defining these concepts as features of positions occupied by actors. Actors jointly occupying a status provide interchangeable indicators of role distance to the status. The actor-status epistemic linkage is thus isomorphic with the indicator-concept epistemic correlation and can be analyzed via structural equation models specifying actors as indicator variables and statuses as unobserved variables. Conceptual issues are addressed here. Part Two, appearing in the next issue of this journal, applies the conception to a system of elite community decision-makers.

摘要:
Four hypotheses concerning contingencies of the societal reaction are investigated for 5,016 21-64 year-old male first admissions to all state mental hospitals in one state between 1956 and 1965. Results support the status (marital) resource hypothesis of societal reactions as well as the hypothesis that degree of behavioral deviance is a significant contingency. Two other hypotheses, dealing with the interaction effects of status resources and behavioral deviance, also receive support.
