摘要:
This paper reviews developments during approximately the last decade in the biochemistry of man which have special significance for family life. Progress in contraception, sex control, the preservation of human germ cells, sex hormonal therapy, geriatrics, and human genetics are considered, in the light of available knowledge and social demand.

摘要:
A review of studies of social class and child-rearing behavior reveals a recurring pattern of inconsistent and contradictory findings. This paper reports the findings of a study of child-rearing attitudes expressed by women during the course of their pregnancies. The data suggest that child-rearing attitudes may be more closely associated with attitudes toward pregnancy than with social class. These findings are discussed in relation to other investigations insofar as existing contradictory findings might be explained from a conceptual rather than a methodological perspective.

摘要:
Informal patient groups on an open psychiatric ward are identified and described by observational and sociometric techniques. The structures and functions of these groups are studied in relationship to those of more formal patient groups. Theleadership cliquefunctioned as a governing, staff-value supporting, and quasi-socializing agency, Thedissident cliquepermitted withdrawal of about-to-be-discharged patients from institutional values but also undermined staff values. Theformal therapy groupstended to be the focus of friendship-choices, especially during periods of unstable community norms.Friendship groupsprovided a protective environment in which the development of a favorable and reality-oriented self-image may occur.

摘要:
Deference behavior is viewed from two standpoints: (a) as an attempt to influence and (2) its function in maintaining social relationships. Data reveal that psychiatric nurses attempt to influence doctors' treatment decisions by engaging in deferential actions; these actions also perform the function of maintaining the doctor-nurse relationship. Such actions are defined aspower strategies—actions that are orientedtoa normative order but which are not in conformity with that order. Power strategies are also reactions to a power order—based on conditions of dependency, as well as actions oriented to a normative order—in this study, the authority structure of the doctor-nurse relationship.

摘要:
It is postulated that there exist patterns of career choice which are based on a series of situational decisions which, individually, have no rational connection with the choice of a particular occupation but, nonetheless, comprise the process of embarkation upon a career. The data are from a study of student nurses.

摘要:
Research among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians would indicate that visible differences among the people in matters of health and education are not only a result of acculturation. Social class behavior seems to figure prominently as a factor in disparate behavior manifested by nonconservative Cherokees.

摘要:
The logical basis and mathematical character of a short method for making population projections by age from one decennial census to another is discussed. The method is based on the assumption that age-specific vital rates and migration rates of the recent past will continue unchanged into the near future, i.e. from the last decade through the next decade. The method includes techniques for making projections of the population under 10 years of age at the end of the decade ahead. An illustrative example is presented and an IBM 650 Program has been prepared.

摘要:
Student respondents were asked to sort statements of a generally misanthropic nature into one of four categories indicating that the statement was in their opinion primarily applicable to Negroes, to Jews, to both, or to neither. A distinctive, mutually exclusive, and highly consensual pattern of Negro and Jewish stereotypes emerges. While the content and assignment of stereotypes is selective, the generality of stereotyping is displayed in the willingness of respondents to stereotype and the association between the number of different stereotypes endorsed. The data thus provide evidence for both the generality of stereotyping and the specificity of stereotype assignment.

摘要:
The purpose of this study is to explain the growth and popularity of consensus theory in present day sociology. It seeks to explore shortcomings in the current employment of the concept of consensus, and in so doing to explain the continued relevance of conflict theory for sociological research. The final aim is to logically distinguish consensus and conflict from the general theory of cooperation—particularly to show that consensus and cooperation do not mutually entail each other. The equation of consensus to social structure and conflict to social dynamics is subjected to criticism on the grounds that such a dichotomization prevents the effective development of a sociological theory of change and process.

摘要:
Some aspects of the relationship of occupational gains of American Negroes during the 1940's to general changes in the occupational structure were investigated to throw light upon the hypothesis that the structural changes were necessary for the large Negro gains. If was found that Negroes made their greatest gains in rapidly expanding occupations, in occupations of intermediate and declining desirability, and in occupations much more desirable to Negroes than to whites. It was concluded that the large Negro gains would not have been possible without the great expansion in numbers of workers in the highly and moderately desirable occupations.
