摘要:
From the time of Charlemagne to the time of the Common Market the same area formed the territorial core of European political organization. Variations in the latter manifest different phases of a continual population movement into and out of this area. Current policy decisions might be facilitated by further analysis of this population movement in its present aspects.

摘要:
A Guttman type scale, constructed to assess the direction and intensity of cultural involvement, was applied to a probability sample of 1,297 adult inhabitants of 85 communities in The Netherlands. The scale correlates positively with religious denomination, educational level, intensity of contacts with mass communication media, and social participation in organizations. Living in big cities, mixed marriages, migration, and symptoms of reference-group disintegration are all associated with extreme scores on the scale. People with these attributes either get more involved in the cultural system than the average, or they lose conventional beliefs and convictions. The theories of social confrontation, cultural contacts, and social upheaval are discussed to account for these associations.

摘要:
Nationalist movements are typically total movements characterized by affectively charged values and demands of full commitment. Due to the spread of information they have become patterned reactions to stereotyped situations. They derive their dynamic psychological strength largely from a collective concern about the status of the group. Among the Ambonese mass demonstrations, the merging of religious and nationalistic ideologies and also rivalry and mutual accusations tended to keep attention focussed on the values of the movement. Impracticability of the aim caused its rapid decline. The primary problem: compensation for loss of status has to be solved now by realistic adjustments on a more individual basis, the success of which is to a large extent dependent on the general economic situation in the Netherlands.

摘要:
The study of modal personalities on the national level has been abandoning its belletristic and speculative ways. It has turned more and more to the use of empirical techniques of research. In this paper, a comparative content analysis is used to recognize cultural values in a systematic way—which, in turn, may give us valid clues about national character.

摘要:
This paper discusses some aspects of Israeli society which have been conducive to the development of strained ethnic relations and manifestations of prejudice. Despite certain cohesive features such as a common religious and ethnic background and a high level of ideological committment and collective solidarity, there has been increasing evidence of a reduction in this solidarity. Emerging divisive elements in the social structure are described and are partially attributed to the heightened solidarity and visibility of specific ethnic groups of immigrants.

摘要:
A procedure is suggested for making causal inferences in situations in which temporal sequences are in doubt. By adding a fourth variable which is a cause of either X or Y, but not both, we may distinguish between the alternative possibilities X → Y → Z and X ← Y ← Z. In principle, the method may be generalized to any number of variables.

摘要:
Relations between groups as actors are most often conducted through specialized representative roles. Action in each role is on behalf of the group that defines it and is seen as the action of the entire group. The functional implications of representative interaction for intergroup and intragroup relations are discussed for each of four types of intergroup situations, the types being based on the variables of power and legitimation.

摘要:
In the present analysis the sociologist is seen as a member of two distinct professional communities within which he plays two separate roles. Utilizing a sample of 262 sociologists receiving the Ph.D. in the period 1945 through 1949, their membership in a community of disciplinary specialists is analysed through publication output, membership in the American Sociological Association and current institutional affiliation. These kinds of data reflect a different orientation to the community of disciplinary specialists as compared to the community of college teaching. High productivity, membership in the Association and affiliation with a major university connote strong situational pressures and personal orientation to the community of disciplinary specialists. Persons who do not publish are less likely to affiliate with the Association and are more likely to be affiliated with four-year colleges and to be primarily committed to the community of college teaching.

摘要:
Records for Iowa first marriages from 1953 through 1957 were used to test relationships between interreligious marriage rates, used as measures of religious endogamy norm saliency, and the ages of spouses and status levels of grooms. Interreligious marriages were represented by marriages of Catholic with non-Catholic spouses or by marriages of persons who identified with any Protestant church with Catholics or persons who were not identified with any Protestant church. A differential relationship between ages at marriage and interreligious marriages rates was clearly observed for Catholic spouses, but only slightly for church-Protestant spouses. Status levels of grooms were inversely related to interreligious marriage rates in all populations. And, ages at marriage and status levels interacted to produce the highest rates of interreligious marriage among the youngest or oldest low status couples. Least interreligious marriage rates were observed among high status couples where spouses were in their twenties. These findings suggested that religious endogamy norm saliency is related to reference group experiences associated with status levels and ages at marriage.

摘要:
Three well-established generalizations of church ecology are re-evaluated with Seattle Standard Metropolitan Area data on distribution and movement of churches by the major faiths, and four functional types of Protestant churches. Principal findings are: (1) Distinctive distributional patterns for geographical and social areas characterize the various religious categories. (2) Church spatial movement appears not to be as important a mode of adjustment to ecological and demographic changes as in the past. (3) No dominant pattern of outward and suburban movement by church organizations is revealed by this study, although intra-area moves are frequent.
