AbstractTopics such as loss, change, stress, and hope are described for use in group sessions or classroom discussions in rural schools for students who are experiencing stress as their families cope with the farm crisis, or other personal or financial difficulties. Guidelines in conducting such discussions for elementary and high school students are provided.

AbstractGiven the importance of parents' involvement in their children's learning, an individualized family plan (IFP) is a viable, structured intervention that involves a home support system for accomplishing educational goals. Through IFP, parents are equipped with appropriate tools for improving their children's education, and educators gain a clearer understanding of the social worker's role in the school.

AbstractAccording to traditional perspectives, parents' adaptation to the birth or diagnosis of an exceptional child is a progression through a series of stages. This article proposes that adaptation is a developmental process that occurs within personal, familial, social, and cultural contexts. In the review of the literature on adaptation that is applicable to Bronfenbrenner's theory of contexts for development, the discussion of each context includes implications for the practice of school social workers.

AbstractThe proposed regulatory changes to P.L. 94–142 in 1982 were extensive and directly affected social workers, children in need of special education and their parents, and other professionals. To evaluate the extent and type of action taken by social work organizations and individuals, the U.S. Department of Education reviewed testimony presented at 11 public hearings and more than 19,000 written comments, almost all opposing the proposed deregulation. This article reports the findings from that review and offers suggestions for more effective political action efforts in the future.
