HADLEY T H E DETERMINATION OF SILICON I N ALUMINIUM AND ITS ALLOYS-H 5 The Determination of Silicon in Aluminium and its Alloys-I1 BY W. H. HADLEY M.A. A.I.C. THE visual colorimetric process developed in Part I1 is difficult to apply when the proportion of silicon exceeds 0.3 per cent. owing to the intensity of colour of the yellow silicomolybdate solution and a method of absolute colorimetry involving the measurement of light absorption is required. For the present work the Pulfrich photometer2 was used in con-junction with a mercury lamp and a filter transmitting the mercury line 4358 A. DETERMINATION OF SILICON CONTENTS 0-30-1.50 PER CENT.-The methods which are nearIy identical with those described for samples containing less than 0.30 per cent. of silicon are as follows: (a) For alloys with alloying metuls not exceeding 0.50per cent.of Mn 0.75per cent. of Fe, 12.5 per cent. of Cu 30 per cent. of Ni and 0.35 per cent. of Cr.-Dissolve 0.1 g. of millings by means of 10 ml. of 10 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution (10 g . per 100 ml. of water freshly prepared in a nickel dish) in a small covered nickel crucible (2 in. diam. x in.). Boil the solution for 4 or 5 minutes cool slightly and transfer to a 50-ml. beaker containing 10 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid. Mix well and heat (do not boil) with occasional stirring until all aluminium hydroxide has dissolved. Cool transfer through a Jena 3G1 sintered glass funnel [where necessary and especially when there is high iron content (>0-75 per cent.) associated with high magnesium content filter through a small Whatman No.43 paper to remove turbidity1] into a standard 100-ml. flask (etched a t approximately 90 ml.) and dilute to 90 ml. Adjust the volume to 100 ml. by addition of 10 per cent. ammonium molybdate solution mix well and allow the yellow silicomolybdate colour to develop (5 to 10 minutes). Determine the extinction value* on the Pulfrich photometer using a 50-mm. cell and filter transmitting the mercury line 4 3 5 8 ~ . Make a blank determination on the chemicals in the same manner, but using 7 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid. (b) For alloys containing more than 0.50 per cent. of M n (other elements as already specijed).-Dissolve 0.1 g. of millings by means of 10 ml. of 10 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution in a small covered nickel crucible. Boil the solution for 4 or 5 minutes cool slightly and pour into 10ml.of 1 2 nitric acid contained in a 50-ml. beaker. Mix well and heat (do not boil) until all aluminium hydroxide has dissolved. Add with stirring, 3 to 5 drops of sulphurous acid and heat for 2 or 3 minutes to dissolve all manganese dioxide. Add dropwise and with stirring N/10 potassium permanganate solution until a permanent pink colour is obtained and then oxalic acid solution (5 g. per litre) until the solution is colourless and finally add about three drops in excess. Heat for 2 or 3 minutes and cool. Make a blank determination with the above modi-fications but using 7 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid. (c) For alloys containing Fe Cu Ni Cr above limits speciJied in method (a) and Mn.-Dissolve 0.1 g.of millings by means of 10 ml. of 10 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution in a small covered nickel crucible. Boil the solution for 4 or 5 minutes cool filter through a small (7.0-cm.) Whatman No. 541 paper into a 50-ml. beaker containing 10 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid kept constantly stirred and wash with cold water. Heat (do not boil) until all aluminium hydroxide has dissolved and cool. Make a blank determination with these modifications but using 7 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid. The final stage in the investigation was to determine the relationship between the extinction value* and the concentration and the limits of accuracy of the methods. Pre-liminary experiments showed that using a 0.1-g. sample of metal a final solution volume of 100 ml. and a 50-mm. cell for the extinction determination the maximum silicon content capable of determination is approximately 1.50 per cent.Above this value the light absorption is nearly complete. For the determination of the relationship between extinction and concentration a series of samples of different silicon contents up to 1.50 per cent. was used and their silicon contents were determined by the standard gravimetric soda m e t h ~ d . ~ The Proceed as in Method (a). Thus the relationship between concen-tration and extinction shows a slight deviation from a linear relationship i.e. does not obey Beer's law suggesting that the yellow silicomolybdate compound is partly or com-pletely colloidal. It is impossible therefore to employ a simple factor for the calculation of the silicon content from the extinction value. A standard curve (Fig. 1) showing the relationship between silicon content and extinction value must be used. SILICON COXTENTS OF 1-5 TO 3.0 PER CENT.-There are two possible procedures:-(a) To use a smaller cell (25 mm.); (b) to adjust the final volume of the solution to 200 ml.For routine analysis it is preferable to standardise the use of one type of cell and alternative (b) was therefore adopted. This necessitated a re-determination of the quantities of the reagents required to obtain the correct $H conditions. It was found that a sample weight of 0.1 g. dissolved in 10 ml. of 10 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution required 10 to 15 ml. of I 2 nitric acid to produce maximum colour development (i.e. maximum extinction value). For the blank determination on chemicals, 6 to 10 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid were required. Hence the quantities of 1 2 nitric acid to be used were fixed a t 12.5 ml. and 8 ml. for the sample and blank solutions respectively.Apart from these modifications and the adjustment of the final volume to 200ml. (the solution in the flask is diluted to 190ml. and made up to 200ml. with 10 per cent. am-monium molybdate solution) the details of the method are identical with those given for silicon contents less than 1-5 per cent. Using the standard curve already obtained (Fig. l) the final stage was the deter-mination of the limits of precision for this range. Hence for silicon contents 3.0 to 14.0 per cent.-using a sample weight of 0.1 g.and a 50-mm. cell for the extinction measurement-it would be necessary in order to bring the extinction values within the above range to have a final solution volume of 1000 ml. ; or, alternatively to dilute the final solution to a given bulk pipette one-tenth of this into a 100-ml. flask dilute to 90ml. and develop the colour by adding 10ml. of ammonium molybdate solution. Before determining the conditions for correct acidity it was necessary to review the quantity and concentration of sodium hydroxide solution to be used for the initial attack, in view of the large amount of silicon to be oxidised. For this purpose several 0.1-g. lots of 11 per cent. silicon alloy were weighed into small nickel crucibles and attacked with 10 ml. of 10 20 and 40 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution respectively and the solutions The latter procedure has been adopted 8 were boiled for 4 or 5 minutes.To ensure complete oxidation and solution of silicon it was found advisable to use 10ml. of 40 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution. (For experimental details see method below.) These experiments showed that 45 to 75 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid should be used and 25 to 65 ml. for the blank determination. Method-Dissolve 0-1 g. of millings in 10 ml. of 40 per cent. sodium hydroxide solution (40 g. per 100 ml. of water freshly prepared in a nickel dish) in a small covered nickel crucible. Boil the solution for 5 minutes and pour it into 60 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid con-tained in a 150-ml. beaker washing with hot water. Warm (not boil) until all aluminium hydroxide is in solution cool and transfer through a Jena 3G1 funnel to a standard 200-ml.flask dilute to 200 ml. and mix well. Pipette 20 ml. of this solution into a standard 100-ml. flask dilute to 90ml. and make up to the mark with 10 per cent. ammonium molybdate solution. Allow the yellow colour to develop (5 to 10 minutes) and determine the extinction value using a 50-mm. cell. Make a blank determination on the chemicals in the same manner but using 45 ml. of 1 2 nitric acid in order to obtain correct acidity. Notes.-1. For high-silicon alloys the only common interfering element is manganese, and the modification given for low-silicon contents is then used. 2. A single determination may be carried out in 30 to 45 minutes and a batch of 10 to 15 determinations in a period of 14 to 24 hours. In conclusion it may be stated that the method described in this and the preceding paper1 have been used for routine analysis for more than a year and have proved extremely satisfactory. Many determinations are made daily and the results have confirmed the accuracy limits and operational times given. This, the fourth edition of the standard and, indeed, so far as the reviewer’s knowledge goes, the only text-book on the subject in the language, bridges L gap of 13 years. The author, pre-eminent in his particular sphere, needs little more introduction to the world of technical industry than he does in his official capicity to readers of THE ANALYST, while his reputation in forensic science in all that appertains to handwriting is international. The chemistry of ink, difficult as it is and at times not a little obscure, hcl- riot developed markedly in the interval since 1924; but what progress has been made is covered by Dr.Mitchell in this edition in a very thorough manner. He has found it necessary to enlarge his work to the extent of some 20 per cent. and, in addition, to rewrite a large portion. The arrangement of the book follows the lines of previous editions. After a comprehensive historical introduction, the work is divided into three sections dealing with writing inks, printing inks, and inks for miscellaneous purposes, respectively. Under Section 1 are considered the chemical nature and treatment of the various raw materials used for writing inks from lcmp black to galls, the composition of finished iron-gall, logwood, vanadium, aniline black, and coloured inks, as well as a comprehensive scheme €or the tech~ical examination of inks, handwriting specimens and the identification of forge:-ies.Section 2 deals with the manufacture and examination of printing inks. ,tnd Section 3 with the miscellaneous materials entering into the compositilxx of copying, marking, safety, sympathetic, typewriter inks and so on. Amongst new matter may be noted references to the use of lignone sulphni--,ites in connection with writing ink, a scheme for the identification of individual con- stituents in inks in the form of writing, and the application of filtered ultra-.& if )let light and of infra-red photography in the elucidation of those problems to which such methods are suited. The British Government Standard Specificatior:s for Writing Inks, revised in 1928, are included for the first time. The avaihble evidence upon the constitution of gallotannin is brought up to date and <tbly reviewed, and there is a Comprehensive list of British patents.It is as difficult to withhold admiration of the encyclopaedic scope cjf the matter and references in this book as it is of the erudition and industry displiiyed in its compilation. Practically nothing that comes to mind has escaped atterition, and it is with rather impish glee that the reviewer, after careful search, asserts that he finds no specific reference to the type of alkaline (ammoniacal) gallotannate- iron ink, said t o find favour in the United States, although the di-ammonium hydroxyferrigallate compound of Silbermann and Ozorovitz receives notice. Nor is there mention of that class of quick-drying writing fluids which depend for their efficiency upon partial destruction of the paper sizing by caustic alk 1.5 or sodium silicate.There is no evidence that lignone sulphonate inks have proved se-rious competitors to iron-gall writing inks (pp. 15 and 175).
