Formylation of 1-phenylpyrrole gave mainly the 2-aldehyde which was converted to the methyl ester. Chlorination produced the 4- and 5-monochloro, the 4,5-dichloro and the 3,4,5-trichloro derivatives and 2-methoxycarbonyl-5-oxo-1-phenyl-2,3,4-trichloro-3-pyrroline which were identified spectroscopically. The mass spectral cracking patterns of the chloropyrrole esters have been interpreted.

Fumarophycine, an alkaloid derived fromFumaria officinalisof Bulgarian origin, is shown by spectroscopic methods to be a new member of the spiroisoquinoline group. It has been related by chemical methods to the alkaloid, fumaritine, of known constitution.

Measurements of the nuclear Overhauser enhancements in the title series permit unequivocal assignments of the 6-substituent in a series of 1,3,5,7-tetramethyltricyclo[5.1.0.03,5]octan-2-ones and derivatives. Supporting evidence provided by long-range coupling interactions through four σ-bonds is also presented. The proton shifts in these systems appear to depend primarily on the degree of steric hindrance; this aspect is discussed.

The mechanism of sulfonation of 4-hydroxyazobenzene and of 4-hydroxyazobenzene-4′-sulfonic acid in concentrated sulfuric acid media is examined through rate correlations and comparison is drawn with sulfonation of alkyl- and halogenobenzenes by means ofplots. It is concluded that several mechanisms are operative in the hydroxyazobenzene system and that the curvature of the plot is the result of a change in rate-determining step from σ-complex formation to proton abstraction.

Electron spin resonance studies of silver cycloalkenyl radicals by γ-irradiation of polycrystalline silver cycloalkene complexes have been extended to include the effect of alkyl substitution at the double bond, the effect of conjugation in cyclic diolefins and the effect of anions, on the formation of these silver cycloalkenyl radicals.

The reaction of methyl-lithium with the phosphonitrilic fluorides (NPF2)3–5follows a predominantly geminal course, the third and fourth substituents in the tetrameric ring entering antipodally to the first two. This behavior, and the competitive occurrence of an addition reaction, is attributed to the π-inductive effect of the substituents on a delocalized homomorphic π-system.
