Browniine, dehydrobrowniine, lycoctonine, hetisine, and a dehydrohetisine were isolated fromDelphiniumcardinaleHook. Delatine, an alkaloid previously isolated fromD.elatumL., was found to be hetisine. These are the first examples of the occurrence of theAconitumalkaloid hetisine inDelphiniumspp.

摘要:
An attempt has been made to redetermine the enthalpy and entropy of formation of the charge-transfer complex between tetracyanoethylene and biphenylene in dichloromethane solution from measurements of the equilibrium constant at different temperatures. The results obtained under conditions where biphenylene is in excess differ from those previously published in which tetracyanoethylene was in excess. It is argued that the optimum condition for determining equilibrium constants of a 1:1 complex is when the reactants are mixed in solution in this ratio. Determinations under this condition yield ΔH = −2.6 kcal mole−1and ΔS = −4.1 e.u.The energies of the intermolecular charge-transfer transitions of biphenylene with several different acceptors suggest that the ionization potential of biphenylene is ~7.4 eV.

Galinovsky observed that O-tosyllupinine (II) readily isomerized to a quaternary tosylate. Without rigorous proof he assigned to this a monomeric azetidinium salt structure. A study of the infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and molecular weight of the compound confirms the 1,5-methylene-quinolizidinium salt structure III.

Ricinine, isolated fromRicinuscommunisL. fed aspartic acid-3-14C and aspartic acid-4-14C, was degraded, and in each case the activity of all the carbon atoms was determined. The results obtained indicate that aspartic acid is incorporated into ricinine via the Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle rather than directly as aspartic acid. Experiments with aspartic acid-13N support this suggestion; they indicate that the ring nitrogen from ricinine is not derived directly from the nitrogen of aspartic acid, since both it and the nitrile nitrogen contain essentially the same abundance of15N.

Condensation ofD-talose with nitromethane in alkaline methanol gave the corresponding epimeric 1-deoxy-1-nitroheptitols which were converted intoD-glycero-L-altro-heptose andD-glycero-L-allo-heptose (1.5:1) in 44% yield. Reduction ofD-glycero-L-altro-heptose with sodium borohydride gave the hitherto unknownmeso-glycero-altro-heptitol. The gas–liquid chromatography retention times of the 10 geometrically isomeric heptitol heptaacetates were determined. These data provide the necessary information for the key step in a procedure for the rapid identification of an unknown heptose.

The temperature dependence of the proton chemical shifts of four substituted benzaldehydes in toluene solution has been measured. From these results, estimates have been made of the enthalpies and entropies of formation of the stereospecific solute–solvent complexes which were previously shown to exist in these systems. These calculations indicate that the ΔHand ΔSvalues are −0.9 ± 0.2 kcal/mole and −4.9 ± 1.3 e.u., respectively. No correlation with substitution is apparent; the results are compared with other available data.

The effects of structure on the shielding of formyl protons of aliphatic aldehydes have been examined. The survey included examples of acyclic, alicyclic, and α, β-unsaturated aldehydes. The potential use of these results as an aid for structural elucidations is discussed, and the limitations are noted.

Periodate oxidation studies, nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of derivatives, and X-ray crystallographic data have shown that plicatic acid, the major component of the heartwood extractive of western red cedar (ThujaplicataDonn), is 2,3,6-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-2-hydroxymethyl-4-(3′,4′-dihydroxy-5′-methoxyphenyl)-tetralin-3-carboxylic acid. The asymmetric configuration by X-ray data is 2R,3S,4R or its enantiomer, by Cahn–Ingold nomenclature.

摘要:
The reported synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetraphenyldiazetidine by treating the sodium adduct of N-benzylidene aniline with benzaldehyde or benzoate ester is reexamined. It is shown that the original report is in error. The products from the reaction are the two diastereomeric N-benzoyl-N,N′,1,2-tetraphenylethylenediamines anddd,ll-N,N′, 1,2-tetraphenylethylenediamine. When diethyl ether was used as a reaction medium, another product, N-benzoyl-N,N′-diphenylstilbene-α,α′-diamine, was formed. An explanation is offered for the formation of these compounds and for the differences in reaction products caused by the two reaction media employed, diethyl ether and te trahydrofuran.
