At a school in Wales, on assignment was given for students to research any one person that could be identified as a new innovator. Everyone agreed that new designers in technology seem to be hidden in company policy R&D schemes. Here is one student's view on today's process of invention.

In the first article, we introduced the BASIC STAMP and saw how to make it do something useful—we made a pelican crossing simulator. In this second article, we will introduce some further concepts and finish with an actual GCSE project.

One teacher in Hertfordshire has brought physics ‘alive’ for his students, as well as bringing together other departments. Simon Bullen built his own seismometer out of his technology ‘scraps’ and about £50 of electronics. Now his students can see earthquakes happening all over the world, understand plate tectonics and see a ‘real-life’ application of electronics and physics applied and working.

This project was part of the Engineering Education Scheme (EES), a programme run by the Royal Academy of Engineering as part of their Engineering Education Continuum. The EES's aim is to give “high calibre” lower-sixth form students the chance to experience working for eight months on a real engineering problem with the support of local industry.
