摘要:
A widely-used technique for sampling arthopods in forage crops employs the D-Vac7® suction sampler (Dietrick 1961). Various attachments, such as a series of different-sized collecting heads, make the D-Vac a versatile sampling tool. For extensive sampling to estimate population parameters of several species of insects and spiders in alfalfa, we have found the ft2area collecting head to be the most useful attachment. Although this has proven generally satisfactory, a source of error was noted with certain species. We observed that some of the large insects and spiders are capable of escaping from the D-Vac by climbing down the sides of the collecting bag after having been sucked into it. To prevent this, we designed a simple “escape barrier” which consists of a flange placed inside the ft2collecting head, as shown in FlG. 1. The flange encircles the entire inside circumfer was taken at each site. This was repeated in different fields on 2 dates ca. 1 month apart. On the 2 dates, 8 and 10 subsamples, respectively, were taken by each technique. The results of sampling 2 representative arthropod species, the hemipteranNabisspp. and the lycosid spiderPardosa ramulosa(McCook), are presented in Table 1.

摘要:
During the mass trapping of the male lesser peach-tree borer,Synanthedon pictipes(Grote and Robinson), on Washington Island, WI (Wong et al. 1972), we needed a lightweight efficient trap that could be handcarried to remote areas, such as fence rows and woodlots that were infested with borers. The standard trap, though efficient, was too awkward and heavy for easy transportation. We, therefore, investigated the efficiency and practicality of a lightweight wing trap developed by Howell (1972) for use vs. the codling moth,Laspeyresia pomomella(L) (sold commercially by the Zoecon Corp. as Pherotrap I®).

摘要:
The sex pheromone of the grape berry moth,Paralobesia viteana(Clemens), was identified ascis-9-dodecenyl acetate (c9-12:Ac), and preliminary trapping experiments indicated that the attractant pheromone could be synergized by several compounds, such as dodecyl and nonyl acetates (Roelofs et al. 1971). Since this insect is the most important fruit-infesting pest of grapes throughout the States E of the Mississippi River, there is much interest in utilizing the pheromone for monitoring and/or controlling this species. Tests in 1972 and 1973 were designed to define an optimum release rate andcis-transratio for the attractant, and to compare various trap designs.

摘要:
Until 1971, lindane, aldrin and heptachlor seed dressings were used in the Canadian Prairie Provinces for the control of wireworms on cereal crops; since 1971, lindane has been the only recommended chemical for this purpose. We undertook the present study to investigate the level of lindane residues in cereal crops grown from lindane-treated seed.

摘要:
Yellow nutsedge,Cyperus esculentusL., has been described as one of the world's most noxious weeds Lewis ' Worsham 1970). Keeley et al. (1970) noted that the larvae of a moth,Bactra verutanavar.chryseaHeinrich, which is native in the U.S., damages the shoots of yellow nutsedge during the late summer months. Since this insect shows some promise as a biological control agent, we developed an artificial diet and rearing procedures for establishing and maintaining a large laboratory colony.
