摘要:
The igneous succession in Mount Royal is outlined emphasizing the fact that there were two distinct advances of a nepheline syenite magma. Those rocks which are definitely known to belong to the older nepheline syenite and those known to belong to the younger are described separately.A number of types are described which belong either to the first or to the second intrusion, but whose relations are not definitely known. These include most of the nepheline syenite pegmatites, nordmarkite pegmatites, soda-rich monzonites, syenites and an unusual porphyry intermediate between a shonkinite and an essexite.Seven chemical analyses are given.

摘要:
An isolated strain ofYeast, derived from Fleischman's preparation, when exposed to monochromatic light responds quite differently to light of different wave-lengths. Slight retardation in growth by red and orange light, stimulation by yellow and green, and increasingly marked retardation in the blue and violet, characterize the effects of the mercury lines of the visible spectrum. There is a sudden transition to stimulation in the near ultra-violet. (λ 3984 Å). Stimulation continues at λ 3650 Å and characterises the region λ 2894 Å to λ 2700 Å, but otherwise the lines employed in this investigation retard growth.Generally the effect either of stimulation or retardation is greater when the control is one of rapid growth rate, but the reverse is the case at the red end of the visible spectrum.

摘要:
A method for the rapid determination of organic nitrogen in liquids is described. It depends upon the liberation of amino, amido, etc. nitrogen as ammonia by an alkali fusion of the organic material. The ammonia is absorbed in excess saturated boric acid solution, and then a titration with standard acid is carried out, using bromophenol blue as the indicator.

摘要:
The reactions between α, β and γ-butylenes and hydrogen chloride are investigated. It is shown that, of the butyl chlorides produced, only the secondary chloride is formed in the reactions with α- and β-compounds, and only the tertiary chloride in the reaction with the γ-compound. In the case of the first two reactions (with α- and β-compounds) it is shown that a secondary product (an octyl chloride) is formed. Its possible structure, 3-methyl-4-chlormethyl hexane for the reaction with the α-compound and 2-chlor-3, 4-dimethyl hexane for the reaction with the β-compound is indicated, and it is shown that these decompose into an octylene and hydrogen chloride. The mechanism of the various reactions and its relation to the rates of reaction is suggested.

摘要:
This paper describes the development and the construction, with optical details, of a high light power spectrograph suitable for the photography of the spectrum of the light of the moonless night sky and the spectra of auroral displays.Preliminary experiments carried out with it in England and in Canada are described. Typical spectrograms recorded by the instrument are shown.Suggestions for still further increasing the efficiency of the spectrograph are made. The advantages of using the spectrograph described are pointed out. Additional investigations of auroral phenomena, and an extension of those previously made are outlined.

摘要:
X rays were scattered by a number of samples of graphite and charcoal in such a way that the scattering increased in intensity as the scattering angle approached zero. In certain cases the scattering at small angles was very similar to the scattering of α-particles; this result cannot be explained easily on the basis of the current views on the nature of X-rays and matter. Experiments are being devised to test what part adsorbed gases play in the phenomena, and to determine whether the scattering at very small angles is a true particle scattering.
