摘要:
Cytochemical studies for iron in starved frogs fed a single large dose (50 to 200 mgm.) of ferric sulphate or metallic iron showed that free iron was most readily absorbed by the intestinal mucosa of the duodenum. Liver iron increased slightly two hours after feeding, reached a maximum condition after six hours, and decreased considerably by 12 hr. The increased liver iron was found in the Kuppfer cells, the lining cells of the sinusoids, and the stellate cells of the pigment patches. Iron in the liver of control frogs was usually confined to the pigment patches. After ferric sulphate solution was fed there was an increase in the amount of free iron in the spleen and in the liver but not in the kidney. There was a marked increase in masked iron in the nuclei of the cells of the liver and spleen, and even in those of the kidney of these same animals.

摘要:
Histological examination of the thyroid glands from chum salmon fry taken in the river, estuary, or sea shows the organ to be in a quiescent condition at the time of migration. If, however, this species is retained in fresh water for two or three months the gland becomes extremely hyperplastic. The pink salmon thyroid behaves in essentially the same way as that of the chum, but migrating pink fry taken at great distances from the sea have active glands. The thyroids of yearling coho and sockeye moving into the sea display heightened activity. Thyroid activity is apparently greater in coho migrants taken later in the season from the headwaters of rivers. In part, the heightened thyroid activity seen in these migrating Pacific salmon is probably a spring-time seasonal change. It seems, however, to be more particularly related to the increased metabolic work of osmotic regulation and salt balance in a fish physiologically prepared for life in the sea. In general, this study suggests that the increased thyroid activity seen in young migrating salmonoids is largely due to increased demands for thyroid hormone in the metabolism of a fish no longer completely adjusted physiologically to fresh water.

摘要:
Eggs of Canton Special stock ofDrosophilawere hatched and larvae reared on medium containing P32. Alternate radioautographed and stained sections were made of larvae, pupae, and adults. Deposition of P32was found to be heavy in fat bodies, nervous structures, and in organs of digestion and excretion. Very high concentrations of P32occurred in imaginal discs. Discharged materials and nuclei from fat bodies had much P32in early pupal stages, the activity becoming concentrated at sites of organ differentiation in later pupae. In the adults, the gonads, the nervous system, and the digestive tract contained much P32.

摘要:
The methods for estimating phenothiazine and phenothiazone in biological materials have been investigated. It has been shown that when phenothiazine, or phenothiazone is treated with bromine (under the conditions described), a red color is produced which has absorption maxima at the following wavelengths: 240, 282, 291, 375, and 510 mμ. Phenothiazone, in 95% ethanol, has a spectrum with absorption maxima at 237, 273, 280, 288, 369, and 508 mμ. Thus the bromine method is not applicable for distinguishing between these two compounds. It is shown also that phenothiazine may interfere with the estimation of phenothiazone when the latter is measured by the light absorption of its free radical. The ultraviolet absorption spectra of phenothiazine and diphenylamineo-sulphoxide have been determined. The spectrum of the former compound has a maximum at 254 mμ (with a small maximum at 318 mμ), and that of the latter has maxima at 227, 272, 302, and 335 mμ. Leucophenothiazone also has a maximum at 254 mμ.While excretion studies on sheep confirm that 40% of the orally administered phenothiazine is lost in the urine, it is shown that the absorption of the drug from the intestine is not dependent upon oxidation to phenothiazone in the rumen. Indeed, the drug appears to be unchanged in this organ. In a postmortem examination of the gastrointestinal tract no phenothiazone was found proximal to the bile duct. It is suggested that phenothiazine is absorbed from the rumen unoxidized. In support of this it is confirmed that some phenothiazine may be recovered unchanged from the urine of the sheep.

摘要:
Under the conditions described, phenothiazine is shown to be soluble in human and sheep serum. Ultraviolet examination of serum containing phenothiazine indicates that the compound is unchanged by solution in serum. After preliminary experiments with ultraviolet analysis the visual spectra of the free radicals were found to be more suitable for the analysis of sheep serum. A method is described, which makes use of free-radical absorption spectra, for the detection and approximate estimation of phenothiazine in serum when it is present with phenothiazone. The method also allows for the detection of diphenylamineo-sulphoxide. Experiments with lambs which had been dosed with phenothiazine showed that while the peripheral circulation contained leucophenothiazone, the blood draining the rumen contained phenothiazine also.

摘要:
In studying the morphology and development ofStrongyloides papillosusit has been shown that four molts occur during the development of the free-living sexual adults, two molts in the formation of the infective larvae, and two molts in the development of the parasitic adults from the infective larvae. The last two occur in the body of the host, one in the lungs and the other in the intestine. The time required by the eggs to hatch and the larvae to develop to either the infective larvae or the free-living adults varies with temperature; at 27 °C. it is 6 hr. and 28 hr., respectively. The so-called "spears" in the oesophagus of the free-living adults were found to be the cuticularized tubular endings of the rays of the oesophageal lumen. The head in the free-living adults bears two well developed lips and four papillae, while in parasitic adults it has four lips and four papillae. The tail of the free-living male bears two pairs of preanal and two pairs of postanal papillae. No males were found in the parasitic generation, while parasitic females were found only in the intestine of experimental animals.

摘要:
The material in this paper is the result of 11 years of collecting over the accessible portions of Alberta, with the exception of the settled area from Lac La Biche to Fort McMurray. The area north from Grimshaw to Fort Vermilion has not been surveyed in detail, and further collections will be made. Nine species are recorded:Dermacentor andersoniStiles,D.albipictus(Packard),Haemaphysalis chordeilis(Packard),H.leporis-palustris(Packard),Ixodes angustusNeumann,I.kingiBishopp,I.sculptusNeumann,I.spinipalpisHadwen and Nuttall, andOtobius lagophilusCooley and Kohls. Maps showing the known distribution of the several species in Alberta are presented.
