摘要:
The educational attainments of Negroes in the southern states are, compared to whites, exceedingly poor, and justly a condition for national concern and remediation. But evidence is presented that interracial differences in educational facilities and accomplishments are not decidedly more pronounced in the South than in the nation, and the question of why this fact has been largely hidden is discussed. The argument is advanced that educational competence rather than educational facilities is a more appropriate measure of opportunity. It is suggested that strategies for remediation must focus on desegregation, on the reprofessionalization of teachers, on creating a sense of efficacy in students, and on reducing the influence of educationally impoverished homes. There is a discussion of authenticity as an issue for white southerners and for Negroes, and a concluding section discusses current tensions between scholarly analysis and social action in the conduct of sociologists.

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to provide an explanation concerning the behavior of the non-white/white unemployment ratio from 1930–66. Two factors are considered, namely the influence of education as measured by years of schooling, and the importance of nonwhite migration from the South. It is argued that while these factors appear to have relevance in a study of adult workers, neither factor can explain the teenage nonwhite/white unemployment ratio.

摘要:
In analyzing Negro political mobilization and its relationship to the political and socio-economic structure of Alabama communities, it was found that substantial changes have been made since the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Negro political mobilization has increased in practically every county of Alabama, being facilitated by the presence of candidates acceptable to Negroes and the presence of federal examiners. Traditional relationships between community socioeconomic structure and Negro political mobilization have been disrupted and new ones instituted. It is thought that these changes in Alabama reflect similar changes occurring in other southern states, and demand a reformulation of many generalizations concerning Negro political behavior.

摘要:
Examination of voting, registration, and census data for 1958, 1960 and 1962 for Los Angeles County revealed unexpected political behavior. Suburbs were selected on the basis of top decile rankings for owner-occupancy, single-unit structures, and new housing (all built 1950–60). Suburbs were not only substantially Democratic, but there were several unexpected patterns of association (e.g., a negative association between voting Democratic and age of housing). Further research revealed two suburbs: “new” suburbs (built 1950–60) had middle-income families and were Democratic; “old” suburbs (built 1946–49) had high-income families and were Republican. These findings support the transfer (screening) thesis and cast further doubt on the chameleon (conversion) thesis.

摘要:
Political alienation, defined as attitudes of estrangement from the political system, is conceptualized as falling into two broad categories: political incapability and discontentment. In the first instance, alienation is forced upon the individual by his environment, whereas in the second case it is voluntarily chosen by him. Survey data indicates that incapability occurs most commonly among persons occupying various disadvantaged social statuses, while discontentment is most prevalent among those comprising the “old middle class.” Neither category of alienation is markedly correlated with any form of political participation, but they do differ sharply in their relationships to party preference and voting. Persons with high incapability and low discontentment vote overwhelmingly Democratic, whereas those with high discontentment and low incapability largely vote Republican.

摘要:
This paper examines the conditions under which individuals form commitments to their cohorts in attempting to improve their relative positions. Working from a Marxian-derived hypothesis, the simulation indicates that subjectively-experienced deprivation combined with awareness of common position produces an orientation to collective, rather than self, betterment. The association is conditional, however, depending upon high money motivation of participants.

摘要:
A questionnaire designed to measure value orientations was administered to a sample of institutionalized delinquents, non-institutionalized delinquents, and non-delinquent adolescents for the purpose of testing some aspects of the Yinger-Cavan approach to delinquent behavior. Several conceptual distinctions were made between contracultures and subcultures to further clarify the Yinger-Cavan discussion. Only partial support was found for the “continuum” approach to deviancy. Members of contracultures (delinquents) did not reject middle-class values as was hypothesized.

摘要:
Although the structure of socioreligious groups receives frequent mention in the sociological literature, systematic analysis of church polity has been generally lacking. The authors draw hypotheses from thecongregational, presbyterian, andepiscopalmodels to examine Protestant and Catholic perceptions of 7 components of church structure. The data are taken from a study of fourteen Protestant and Catholic congregations in two Oklahoma communities. Responses to 7 original questionnaire items indicate that Protestants and Catholics perceived Protestant churches as democratic and the Catholic church as hierarchical. The authors suggest that the current conceptualizations of thecongregational, presbyterian, andepiscopalmodels of church structure are inadequate, but can be used to guide further research, which may either refine these models or lead to the development of alternative orientations to the study of church structure.

摘要:
This paper examines Simmel's analysis of the secret society as a source of rich insight into the role of secrecy in social organization. Some of the central attributes of the secret society as a constructed type are reviewed, and the principal instance of an attempt to empirically test Simmel's analysis is evaluated. Then, Nine Propositions extracted from Simmel's essay are presented and discussed. The major contention of this paper is that if Simmel's insights are to be fruitfully utilized, the deliberate generation of sound propositions must be the first step.
