摘要:
Developmental change is planned change leading toward development. There has been little application of this concept in race relations, though general development and the solution of racial problems may be interdependent.Although the extent to which man can plan and control his own destiny is still undetermined, developmental change in race relations appears feasible if it is conceived as a planningprocessguided by general values and goals, and continuously readjusted to take account of new conditions. The scientific knowledge and skills of sociologists impose on them an obligation to “backstop” the planning. Sociologists in the South may have a special obligation.

摘要:
This paper presents an analysis of the factors causing variation in the degree and character of civil rights leadership competition in 14 cities. Leadership competition is found to be closely linked with structural components of the Negro subcommunity. Organized competition is found in cities where leaders have several independent bases of support, while independent competition occurs where there is a weak community prestige structure. Also, evidence is presented which clarifies the social consequences of leadership competition. Organized competition facilitates intense activity, but individual competition most often results in sustained civil rights activity. Cities with no leadership competition seem best capable of maintaining a disciplined drive for specific goals.

摘要:
Two hypotheses regarding tolerance of the speech behavior of others are extracted from Stouffer's work. By interpreting the conditions of the hypotheses in terms of acontactand anexpected rewardseffect resulting from educational differences, and aperceived rewardseffect resulting from occupational status differences, seven predictions are formulated. The seven predictions are compared to data from a relatively highly-educated, mobile, and predominantly southern female sample. The hypotheses find general support but there are several anomalies. These irregularities are examined in terms of possible implications for the hypotheses and tentative explanations are suggested.

摘要:
Interviews with 118 randomly selected jazz musicians and four months of participant observation yield evidence strongly suggesting changes in the occupation ideology of jazz musicians. Age controls on the findings suggest that jazz musicians are becoming less hostile toward audiences and the larger society, that in-group norms promoting cohesiveness are weakening, and that jazz musicians are becoming less inclined to interact only with their own kind. These major attitudinal shifts are attributed to an increased positive valuation of jazz music by the general public. Implications drawn from the study include a criticism of a priori assumptions of homogeneity in the study of occupational or deviant groups and some further comments suggesting the value of a focus on occupational ideologies in the study of occupational change.

摘要:
In a traditional society like India the old values, norms and images of different social classes are expected to be replaced by new ones. Presuming this, an attempt has been made to explore the stereotypes of ten important castes of the province of Bihar. Two hundred students of Patna University, selected by simple random technique, were administered questionnaires consisting of a check list containing 100 characteristics and a device to measure the preference for association. The findings were: (1) the caste stereotypes explored did not record appreciable change when compared with the stereotypes reported by other authors, (2) arho-coefficient correlation of .94 was obtained between stereotypes and preference for association, and (3) the traditional functions assigned to the castes seem to have greatly influenced the caste stereotypes held by the students.

摘要:
Terms of address reflect, perhaps more than other parts of speech, the ideological basis of a society's status structure. Therefore, if that society has undergone, or is undergoing, rapid social changes, it is to be expected that linguistic changes will become evident in many areas but specifically in that of social relations. It is vitally important to know the right terms of approach to one's equals, one's superiors, and one's inferiors. This study traces the social and political changes that took place in Indonesia during the past century up to the present, and examines some of the linguistic changes that accompanied them.It was found that, whereas prewar terms of address reflected regional diversity and the status categories of feudal and colonial times, the modern terminology shows a tendency toward unification and greater equality.

摘要:
This paper deals with the central themes in the cognitive orientation of the inhabitants of Erongarícuaro, a mestizo agricultural village of 2,400 people on the shore of Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, 250 miles west of Mexico City and in the ways in which these themes can be confirmed. The paper also demonstrates how the use of Thematic Apperception tests (in addition to the usual methods of participant observation by anthropologists) sharpens the fieldworker's insights and leads to a more logical and coherent interpretation of the data. Moreover, TAT responses have definite research value for the frequency of certain themes leads the fieldworker to search for overt manifestations of them in everyday life, manifestations whose significance might not be fully appreciated without cues given by the projective material.

摘要:
Although overtly concerned with overseas cultural groups, this paper considers social systems in terms of ethnic boundaries, structures, variables and policies. Systems of ethnic status structuralization are outlined; a classification of historic ethnic status systems is proposed; correlates of ethnic identity are formulated; types of boundary patterns are associated with types of ethnic orientation; and the pressures toward ethnic solidarity are associated with degrees of societal specialization and division of labor. The orientation of the paper is historical, cross-cultural and structural.

摘要:
Birth order (ordinal position) in the nuclear family has been found to be related to a large number of social and psychological factors. Yet the reasons why are not clear. The literature on birth order reflects considerable theoretical confusion. It appears that researchers often discover the significance of birth order accidentally while engaged in other research. As a result their theorizing tends to bepost hocand to have a disconnected character. There is a need for some system which will aid in the evaluation of existing research findings, and indicate strategic areas for future research. Such a system is introduced, along with some suggestions for research.

摘要:
Elementary probability statements are employed in causal inference models as an alternative to Blalock's correlation technique. By making use of certain simplifying assumptions, surplus equations become available for predictive use. Probability statements and predictions are shown for one-way causal models with causal chain, possibly spurious, and convergent patterns of relations. Fictitious data are used to illustrate the feasibility of probability models. Probability models thus provide another perspective for the kinds of causal models considered by Blalock.
