McClelland's theory of economic development claims that at any given time, the national level of a psychological motive called “need for achievement” (nAchievement) is a major determinant of the nation's subsequent rate of economic growth. Predictions from the theory are tested for the period 1950–71. N Achievement does not generally predict the economic growth of nations.

Allocations to member agencies in 1962, 1967, and 1972 were examined for a sample of 66 United Funds. It was argued that the allocations to agencies would be a function of the power of the agency in the Fund, which was determined by the agency's dependence on the Fund and the Fund's dependence on the agency. As expected, there was a positive correlation between outside funds raised and resources received from the United Fund, and this result held when various community demographic variables were introduced into the analysis as controls. Further, as predicted by the power-dependence formulation, the relationship between outside funds and allocations from the United Fund was larger for agencies that were less dependent on the Fund and on whom the Fund was more dependent.

Urbanologists and ethologists have strongly asserted that there is a human analogue of the crowding effects found among other animals. Extrapolating from animal behavior, it has been argued that sexual aberrations and deviations result from crowded conditions. Using a sample of urban families residing in conditions that range from compressed to open, crowding is observed to have very selective and modest effects on human sexual behavior—whether it be marital sex, extramarital involvement, homosexuality, or incest. Where an impact is noted, the greatest effect of crowding, as would be expected, is in a perceived lack of privacy for marital intercourse. But this is not followed by any of the deviations previously found among other animals.
