摘要:
Little attention has been given to the measurement of the concept of tie strength. Using survey data on friendship ties, we apply multiple indicator techniques to construct and validate measures of tie strength. Vie conclude that: (1) there may be two distinct aspects of tie strength, having to do with the time spent in a relationship and the depth of the relationship; (2) a measure of “closeness” or intensity is the best indicator of strength; (3) there are difficulties with frequency and duration of contact as indicators of strength; (4) predictors of strength (e.g., kinship, neighboring) are not especially strongly related to the concept; and (5) the constructed measures of strength, particularly the one of “time spent,” are valid in that they are related to predictor variables in anticipated directions.

摘要:
Although southern textile workers typically are portrayed as anti-union and extremely deferential, there is little empirical evidence to support such an assertion. We present data from 208 textile workers in a southern textile community without any unionized mills. We find that paternalistic class relations are still a factor in worker attitudes but that workers also express higher levels of activism and union support than expected. The continued presence of paternalism in the textile industry is explained in terms of a peripheral industry within a peripheral region. Variations in union support are related most strongly to length of time at the current mill, gender, and amounts of deference and activism expressed.

摘要:
Historically, petit bourgeois ethnic groups have been able to mobilize to support collective economic goals. This study examines whether they can still draw on ethnic community support when many members no longer have an economic stake in the issue. Survey data on Japanese American support for the Japanese American farmers' position on a farm labor referendum were collected. There was a high degree of support among the second generation regardless of geographic poximity to the issue but a substantial decrease among the third generation as a function of distance. The analysis suggests that across generations ethnicity rests on different factors: for the older generation it is based on mutual cooperation and material aid; for the younger generation it is primarily a psychological dimension of selfidentification.

摘要:
A formal theory is developed to describe when decision-making in informal task groups is not affected by group members' status identities. The theory is used to derive functions which express the equivalence of two conditions: one in which a status and a performance variable may have an effect on task decision-making, and one in which only a performance variable may have such an effect. To evaluate the predicted equivalence we examine the decision-making process by taking the total derivatives. It was predicted that there would be no significant differences in comparing derivatives for (1) High Performance and High Performance-Low Status treatments, and for (2) Low Performance and Low Performance-High Status treatments. Data supported the first prediction but not the second. Theoretical implications are discussed.

摘要:
Religious institutions are identified as important in maintaining a mastery-over-nature orientation in Western culture. This orientation has presumably influenced environmental attitudes in a negative manner. Despite widespread discussion, little empirical research has been undertaken to examine these relationships. This paper identifies three alternative approaches to examining the link between religious identification and commitment, mastery-over-nature orientation, and concern for environmental problems: (1) White's model, (2) a denominational diversity model, and (3) a “no difference” model. These approaches are examined empirically using data from a mail survey of Washington State residents. The results indicate support for the view that Judeo-Christians are generally more committed to the mastery-over-nature orientation than non-Judeo-Christians, but that this commitment varies considerably among denominations. Furthermore, commitment to the mastery-over-nature orientation is instumental in shaping concern for environmental problems.
