AbstractData were collected on the characteristics of homeless elementary school-age students in Madison, Wisconsin, to provide direction for school programming for this population. Teachers completed the Achenbach Teacher Report Form, which yielded data on the adaptive functioning, academic performance, and emotional adjustment of 88 students. Demographic data were also collected and were integrated with the existing research on the characteristics and needs of homeless children and with the literature on educational programming for this population. The findings indicate a diversity of needs. Teachers perceived that about one-third of the children were functioning within the normal range both academically and behaviorally, and the remainder exhibited some degree of difficulty. As school districts respond to the needs of homeless students, they cannot presume a child's needs based solely on his or her homelessness.

AbstractPeer mediation programs in educational settings have increased considerably during the past five years. Despite the popularity of these programs, attempts to evaluate their impact are sparse. This article describes a study to evaluate the impact of a peer mediation program. It was found that there was a significant difference between students who received mediation and those who received traditional discipline (warnings, suspension, and demerits) with respect to recidivism. Peer mediation, with its emphasis on democracy, empowerment, and problem solving, seems particularly attractive for school social workers.

AbstractThis article demonstrates the synergistic effect of uniting the structure, process, and philosophy of two well-known approaches to systemwide change: organization development and community organizing. The product of this union, entitled the “organization development empowerment process” (ODEP), facilitates individual and organizational empowerment, especially in public organizations. This article describes the ODEP as it was used in one suburban school district following a top-down initiative for restructuring its five elementary schools. Social workers are urged to consider the thoughtful interweaving of seemingly disparate change efforts, a practice critical to the continued effectiveness of the public school system.

AbstractIf the new wave of school reform is to be successful, the enhanced expectations and growing cultural diversity of school children demand integrative structures between home and school. Concurrent movements for the involvement of parents in the school community and in the education of their children present major opportunities for the development of the school social work role. An analytic review of the school social work literature and history provides the basis for the discussion of a school social work role that integrates and differentiates home and school in a redefined school community.

AbstractFighting and assaults have been identified as major problems in schools. Social learning theory has been found to explain deviant behavior, and the authors conducted a study to apply this theory to explain students' fighting. Anonymous questionnaires were administered to 256 junior and senior high school students in a small, rural community of eastern Texas. Logistic regression analysis showed that social learning theory was supported. In addition to providing further support for social learning theory, the findings contribute to social work knowledge base and provide directions for intervention by school social workers.
