AbstractInterracial relationships and marriages are becoming more acceptable and more common in U.S. society, and the number of interracial children is steadily increasing. Social workers encounter such children in foster care, adoptive care, schools, and caseloads. Historically, these children have been viewed as having the same identity as their minority parent and the same needs as other minority children. This attitude is changing, and school social workers need to respond to these changes. This article discusses current knowledge about interracial children and their families and suggests ways social workers can best respond to the individual needs of this population.

AbstractFoster children are at grave risk for academic failure. The psychological problems that can accompany maltreatment and foster care status may result in rejection by and isolation from both peers and adults. This article describes the sources and manifestations of these risks and outlines a role for school social workers. Comprehensive services for this vulnerable population include assessments for learning disabilities; mediation and advocacy with teachers and administrators; and collaboration with other key actors, including biological parents, foster parents, and child welfare workers.

摘要:
AbstractThis article reviews the literature on the socialization of youths in the workplace. The review focuses on conditions in the workplace that limit opportunities for youths to acquire competence. The literature suggests that enhancing opportunities to acquire competence requires that more adults be involved in the work activities of youths, that businesses place greater emphasis on social responsibility when training youths, that adults realize that work is not necessarily an opportunity for meaningful experimentation, and that job performance evaluations be based on improved communication between young workers and their superiors. Policy, practice, and research initiatives are recommended for social workers in secondary educational settings.

AbstractKnowledge of the factors that place children and youths at risk for drug and alcohol abuse is an important planning tool for schools seeking to implement comprehensive prevention programs. This article identifies risk factors for substance abuse and recommends that school-based prevention efforts systematically address these risk factors. Programmatic efforts that use risk-focused strategies are discussed.
