摘要:
AbstractThis article reviews the problem of alcohol abuse in young people and critiques traditional affective, humanistic, and psychosocial approaches to alcohol abuse prevention. These models treat students as passive recipients rather than active participants. The article discusses the value of empowerment methods and presents research support for empowerment models that encourage growth through involvement and participation. In an innovative and cost-effective prevent and empower program, which combines information from the traditional prevention methods and empowerment strategies, students learn about the dangers of alcohol abuse, are actively involved in program development, become alcohol abuse prevention teachers, and have opportunities to enhance their interpersonal competence and confidence. The program links students from institutions of higher education with secondary and intermediate schools. School social workers can play vital roles in these programs.

摘要:
AbstractEducation plays an important role in current rural community development strategies. Good schools and an educated work force are needed to attract high-paying jobs to rural communities. The educational aspirations of rural high school seniors were analyzed using data obtained from the Monitoring the Future Project. From 1977 to 1989, students' plans to attend college increased in rural areas but failed to keep pace with urban communities. Educational aspirations were positively linked with parental education and student academic ability but not with general sense of well-being or plans to stay in the community. School social workers can help by enabling students to increase their self-concept of academic ability, providing role models to encourage rural youths, informing students and parents about financial aid possibilities, and participating in broad community development efforts.

AbstractThis article describes a preventive educational program that acknowledges and addresses the issue of dating violence. The program, which was successfully used for three years with students and teachers at the junior high and high school level, centers on attitudes and popular myths that surround the dating activity of young people. The program is experientially based to increase students' attention and involvement during presentations and discussions.
