摘要:
AbstractSchool social workers traditionally have functioned as mediators between home and school when a problem that involves individuals has developed. However, these social workers often encounter barriers to achieving excellence in education. To overcome these barriers, social workers must assume the roles of trainer, resource developer, family educator/consultant, and advocate to forge new family-school partnerships. These roles are derived from a primary prevention model and are grounded in the systems perspective. An expanded perspective of school social worker roles is required. This perspective necessitates a proactive approach that focuses on groups and systems. Social workers face the challenge of providing a link between schools and parents.

摘要:
AbstractAn empowerment model includes five components: (1) empowerment of individuals, (2) reduction of learned helplessness, (3) enhancement of internal locus of control, (4) reframing, and (5) consultation. Significant adults who surround a troubled student are seen as the most effective focus of intervention because of their strengths, resources, and influence. To blend these components into a workable strategy, social work staff function exclusively as consultants and do not engage in traditional school social work roles. As consultants, social workers engage parents, other relatives, and teachers in a collaborative process of assessment, decision making, and responsibility for follow-through. Those involved in the consultation are supported as valuable and important in shaping the course of events in a student's life.

摘要:
AbstractTruancy is one of the most alarming social problems school social workers and educators face daily. Because of the complex conditions that contribute to truancy, the etiology and development of the problem are unclear. The authors use a literature review to discuss the etiology of truancy and use an ecosystems perspective as a conceptual framework to analyze potential causes of truancy and to discuss relevant interventions for practitioners.

摘要:
AbstractA sense of humor often is an indication of good mental health as well as a vehicle for promoting it. Laughter and humor in social work with children can help establish rapport, reduce anxiety, present insights, and provide a healthy coping mechanism. Understanding the aggressive and disrespectful capability of humor helps social workers avoid its misuse and consequent harm to clients.
