IntroductionCrystal engineering with desired functions and fascinating topological architectures has been of great interest recently.1–3Considerable effort has been focused on the supramolecular networks assembled by covalent,4hydrogen bonding5or other intermolecular interactions.6Hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking play an important role in crystal packing, molecular recognition and the stability of the inclusion complex, although they are weaker than the covalent force.7Previous studies have been mainly focused on the 4pyridine ligands and carboxylates.8,9In this work, we have chosen 4,4′bipyridine dioxide (dpdo) as a ligand, considering not only its longer spacer but, more importantly, its capability of participating in hydrogen bonding. Although numerouscoordination polymers based on 4,4′bipyridine have been well documented,10only rarely have examples of dpdo compounds been investigated.11–13We report herein the preparation and crystal structures of two new compounds, [Fe(H2O)5(dpdo)]SO4·4H2O1and [Cd(dpdo)(H2O)3I2]·0.5dpdo2, which exhibit ladderlike and 2D sheet motifs formed by hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions, respectively.
