摘要:
This is the second in a series of articles which will be of interest to anyone building their own interfaces for BBC Model Bs, Masters or Archimedes for datalogging or control. The first article, which appeared in the Summer 1991 issue ofElectronics Education, dealt with the Archimedes printer port and provided some guidelines on writing a simple software program. This article offers some pointers on protecting your computer and discusses conditioning analogue inputs and analogue input software.

Harlow Council, in conjunction with a number of local employers, training providers and schools, staged its second ‘Women into Science and Engineering’ course during the schools' autumn half-term holiday. This was the second year it was held and it is hoped that it will become an annual event. In Harlow, the impetus to set up the course came from the Science and Engineering Working Party, a subcommittee of the town's Training Forum, which aims to bring together training providers, employers and consumers. There are a number well known companies undertaking research and development work (e.g. STC, Smithkline Beecham, Smith and Nephew, Merck Sharp and Dohme and Cossors)who are experiencing difficulties in the recruitment of suitably qualified scientists and engineers, which has been exacerbated by the growth of Stansted Airport on Harlo's doorstep. Traditionally many of these jobs have been undertaken by men, and there was general agreement that more could be done to encourage girls still at school to pursue careers these areas

摘要:
The National Curriculum for Technology is new, it involves a new way of working and to some extent a re-arrangementof familiar knowledge, skills and processes. It seems clear that the major assessment focus will be through project work. In this article I want to show the importance of project work, and in particular electronics project work, by considering an existing scheme, the Leicestershire Modular Framework (LMF), that has many parallels with Design and Technology as laid out in the National Curriculum. I will indicate the kinds of activities that produced successful projects in terms of assessment and show how electronics based projects can be such a useful means of achieving evidence of Design and Technology capability.

The Merlyn reading aid is aimed at 11–14 year old reluctant readers. It features four complete story boards with pop-up mechanisms, complemented with colourful artwork for a science fiction narrative. It also contains unique electrical components and a game-playing, interactive scenario that is designed to innovate and stimulate disinterested children.

摘要:
My mother teaches infants and used to occasionally go into her school with her. While there, I helped her and watched the children as they were being taught. I soon became aware of some of the problems the children were having in learning to write properly. I felt that a pupil-controlled aid to writing was needed, and that this was an opportunity for me to design and build a system that would: hold the pupils' attention, be safe to use without supervision, not be too expensive, help overcome this learning difficulty, save the teacher's time, and be a good project for my GCSE Technology.

Occasionally contributions to electronics education are received from overseas. This is one such piece received recently from the United States. Although the demonstration described is common in schools, it is the very fact that there is a different terminology and approach within, this article that we include it in the journal. The American use of English has deliberately been left unedited. The teaching of this topic is aimed at ‘two-year college level students’, or in the English system years 7 and 9. it is hoped, in this unedited version, that the article informs and entertains and that the reader can use the ideas for their teaching.
