A couple of years ago a group of eleven year olds in my class had finished a paper and pencil unit of work on volume. The unit had covered two topics: the relationship between litres, millilitres and cubic centimetres and the reading of volume scales located on the sides of vessels. The accuracy of the pupils' calculations was mediocre and, in an effort to improve it, I set the children a series of individual practical tasks. At the conclusion of a task, each pupil had to have their answer checked by a colleague before submitting it to me the teacher. The exercise proved a lively and profitable one and in an endeavour to extend the topic and capitalise on the enthusiasm generated, I hit on the idea of posing a problem which required the use of a microcomputer.

The acquisition of a weather satellite link at Kaskenmoor School, Oldham, presented both a benefit and a problem. The choice was difficult: either get more chairs around the stand-alone satellite computer, or turn it of and let the cobwebs grow. However, a third, more profitable, approach has been achieved by employing a network.

This is the first of a two-part article, the second part of which will appear in this year's Autumn issue ofElectronics Education.In this article no attempt has been made to provide an historical summary of the data capture devices and systems which have been used in classrooms since the introduction of the microcomputer or to review the range of data capture equipment available at the present time. Rather, it is hoped that this paper will provide the reader with an outlineof a complete data capture system and an understanding of the criteria by which he/she may select a suitable data captur system from those available.

The Department of Electronics and Computer Science here at Southampton University includes about 20 lecturers who specialise in Computer Science. Five of these lecturers are women. Computer Science is a challenging subject, as both hardware and software technologies are continually evolving. In industry, there is a seemingly greater need for graduates thanthe universities and polytechnics can ever supply, even at times of recession. It is very clear that skills beyond pure expertise with algorithms and programming are required for careers in Information Technology; there is a need to communicate, document and work in groups, as well as be proficient at some of the more abstract areas of the subject. Thereis good reason to believe that young women as well as young men should be attracted to careers in the IT area, yet the number of women applying for degrees in Computer Science over the whole of the UK decreased astonishingly between five andsixyears ago and has never recovered.
