摘要:
The early stages of system design and evaluation are rarely treated in a systematic way. Furthermore, system design tools have mostly been applied to the later phases of the design cycle. The paper presents a quantitative basis for the high-level design of digital systems in the form of probabilistic and simulation models and several performance measures. These tools form a major part of an overall system design methodology which has been valuable in the design, optimisation and evaluation of large-scale digital systems. The application of the modelling tools to the design of a distributed processing system is demonstrated. Validation of the results by simulation reveal an average error of less than 3% for this example.

摘要:
The absence of in-circuit emulation facilities on the Ferranti FDS-10 microprocessor development system may force unacceptable restrictions on the development of hardware and software for an FlOO-L-based project. The disadvantages of this lack of support are discussed and a solution is presented, in the form of a pseudo-emulation facility, which provides many of the features normally associated with in-circuit emulation. Development of a special-purpose interface circuit, allowing communication between the FDS-10 and the target hardware and software, is described and details are given of the monitor program which runs in the FDS-10 and which controls the hardware via the interface.

摘要:
A new technique for diagnosis of microcomputer systems is presented, based on a modified triple voting algorithm to distributively test the system without a central controller. The algorithm is shown to yield a remarkable reduction in diagnosis and reconfiguration time compared with other techniques. The application of this technique to large microcomputer architectures is described and simulation results are presented.

摘要:
This paper reports the use of microprocessor multiplexing techniques to reduce the size of the umbilical between the surface (ship) and a submersible compression chamber (SCC. Two Intel 8085 microprocessors have been used in a master/slave arrangement. The master microcomputer (on the surface) monitors all the control panel switches and transmits this information via two separate cables to the slave microcomputer (in the SCC. The slave carries out the switching electronically, checks that all the devices in the SCC are working correctly and then transmits back diagnostic information to the master for analysis and display. A laboratory demonstration model has been constructed to illustrate the remote control and monitoring of four important devices: namely, heater, motor, transducer and camera. The necessary engineering and safety features have been outlined.
